Attending the meeting as sponsors spon-sors of the measure were Verne Curtis of Salt Lake City, business busi-ness agent of the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, and State Representative Rep-resentative Joe Brusatto, Democrat Demo-crat of Magna. The resolution follows: "Whereas, Within recent times whole sections of the lead-zinc industry have been devastated by sharply falling prices as increasing increas-ing supplies continue to exceed industrial needs. The price of lead has fallen by 12 per cent and the price of zinc has fallen by 26 per cent. These depressed prices are the direct result of greatly expanded imports of the metals and their ores, and "Whereas, the near-complete and total shutdown of the lead-zinc lead-zinc mines in our great state of Utah has caused hundreds of Utah citizens to lose their jobs and they are now wards of the state and county relief rolls in order to survive, and "Whereas, Many of these citizens citi-zens so affected are being forced to seek a livelihood in other than their home state of Utah, and "Whereas: At the present time the United States Tariff Commission Com-mission has before it an application applica-tion by the domestic lead-zinc industry of this country for relief in the form of increased tariff duties and imposition of import quotas, this hearing to commence com-mence November 17, 1957, before be-fore the commission, and "Whereas: The Democratic Party of the state of Utah believes be-lieves the Tariff commission will find in its investigation of this vital problem that increased imports im-ports have caused serious injury to the domestic lead-zinc industry, indus-try, especially herein Utah, and in the nation as a whole. "Whereas, Be It Resolved that the Democratic party of the state of Utah go on record as supporting support-ing the domestic lead-zinc industry in-dustry in its application to the Tariff Commission, and "Be It Further Resolved That the Utah Democratic Party recommend rec-ommend to the President of the United States the following: "1. The establishment of such absolute import quotas on lead-and lead-and zinc, their ores and products thereof, as may be found necessary, neces-sary, in conjunction with increased in-creased duties, to remedy the present injury to the domestic lead-zinc industry." |
