Show HE SMASHED COURLAY- J. II. Vandenberge Resents an Alleged Insult to UU Wife. J. H. Vandenberge, stenographer in the city recorder's office, was arrested last night by Officer Eslinger, charged with assault and battery upon the person of C. B. Gour-lay, Gour-lay, a well-known real estate agent. The latter was also at rested. It appears that Vandenberge had a grievance. griev-ance. About a month ago Mrs. Vandenberge was passing the Walker house, when a man whom she alleges was Gourlay accosted her. She informed her husband at the time. The next day the offense was repeated. Van at once put on his war paint. At Garfield Beach Mrs. Vandenberge pointed out Gourlay, and but for the interference of friends, the latter would have been the poundee in a pummelling pummel-ling match. Yesterday the two came together and Van went at him rough-shod. The interference of the officer saved Gourlay. The charge of assault was dismissed. Gourlay claims a mistake was made. |
