Show the Utah commission, composed of gentlemen gen-tlemen who visit us rarely, and have but the most superficial knowledge of the situation, does not begin to compare com-pare in value to the comprehensive and able report which Governor Thomas annually submits to the authorities at Washington. The governor is in close touch with the daily life of the territory, terri-tory, and far better able for that reason rea-son to report intelligently upon the progress of events here. The report of the commission will create no interest here, and should not be regarded as an important document by the country at large. THE UTAH COMMISSION. The annual report of the Utah commission, com-mission, the gist of which was presented pre-sented to the public first in last evening's even-ing's Times, illustrates how utterly useless use-less a board of conscientious and honorable hon-orable men may be in a department of the pubiic service of which there is no need. Thf Ttmf.s does not acres with thosa who assail the members of the commission commis-sion in and out of season. It has the highest respect for the distinguished gentlemen who compose the commission, commis-sion, and believes they do their work conscientiously and endeavor to earn their salaries. At the same time, we are cf the opinion that the territory has outgrown the necessity for tho existence exist-ence of the commission and that this report is the best evidence of the fact. The commission says that the new political movement in Utah, "if properly prop-erly fostered and honestly managed," will be productive of good. This is a self-evident fact, which has already been acknowledged by both of the great political parties in national conventions, con-ventions, and to which the declaration of the commission can therefore add no force. What the commission says about polygamy is of no moment. Everybody Every-body knows the institution is officially abandoned, and that what there is left of it is but a dying ember.
