Show rado Iron works In Denver, hare constructed a new furnace, using the Austin method of treatment for the reduction of low grade ores that is to say, grades which cannot be profitably handled by the water jacket system at the present price of silver. This furnace began Its work on the 2Sth of July, and while the management is observing the strictest secrecy as to the results, it is known that their best anticipations have been , exceeded by the first trial runs. Certain defects de-fects of a mechanical nature were discovered and have been remedied, but on the whole the principle has been well established and may be pronounced a success. While it will not work a revolution in the smelting business busi-ness of the state, it certainly will achieve marvelous benefit to THE LEADVILLE DISTRICT by furnishing a. market for thousands of tons of material which otherwise would be worthless. This establishment is conducted by the owners of the Henrietta Maid Mining company, D. H. Moffat, president, who purchased the right for Lake county. Their own mines will supply all the mineral it can consume. By and by, as the need appears, ap-pears, other furnaces will be added and the company become a regular purchaser from other mines having large quantities of the same kind of mineral. Mr. Moffat also controls con-trols the output of the Amethyst mine at Creede, and the AXACOXDA GOLD MINE at Cripple creek, both of which are producing produc-ing immense quantities of dry silicious ores, admirably suited to ibis process of treatment. treat-ment. He has ordered several carloads of each to Leadville for trial runs, and if satisfactory, satis-factory, consignments in that direction wiil be continuous. It is not improbable that all the ores, except lead, taken from the Leadville Lead-ville properties under his control, will ultimately ulti-mately be consumed at the Bi-metallic establishment. estab-lishment. It is understood that mineral which contains con-tains 10 to 15 ounces silver per ton can be treated at a profit by this method. The ten profit is on iron matte, which may be paired by themselves or sold to the lead smelters ' when it is in strong demand. Twelve to fifteen fif-teen tons of ore are reduced to a single ton of matte, which carries the precious metals. As a matter of fact, very little information beyond the items stated above can be obtained. ob-tained. The owners of the patent believe they have made a wonderful advance, and are disposed to make the most of their 6e-1 6e-1 cret. They have constructed a plant with LEADVILLE, COLO. Leadville, Colo., Aug. 12. Events fashioned fash-ioned by the untiring pluck, energy and enterprise' en-terprise' of a few men, are hastening a new epoch in the affairs of Leadville district. We have noted from time to time the progress of the drainage system began last winter, whereby some great deposits of valuable ore extending from Carbonate Hill beneath the city are to be rendered available by the introduction in-troduction of a large number of pumps propelled pro-pelled by costly machinery. This work has been carried on with great energy and skill, so that now the immense water basin may be explored by miners for the treasures demonstrated dem-onstrated by diamond drills. But the ore bodies will not be reached for ! some time. Meanwhile we can only speculate specu-late upon their extent and value from the cores brought up and assayed. It is believed, be-lieved, however, that large quantities of tine carbonate of lead will be found, and if these hopes are realized, U will be a blessing to j the entire smcltingTndustry of the state. At present there is very little carbonate ore in the district. THE HENRIETTA AND MAID, the Adams and the Louisville, which until recently have produced the greater part of this class of ore, are well nigh denuded, and yielding only sulphide and copper. It is a hard struggle for the five smelting establishments establish-ments now running to get lead enough to work with under the lowest admissible charges, 10 to 12 per cent. Hence they are . watching with the keenest anxiety the very extensive preparations for opening the deposits de-posits in the so-called city shafts. Another element which promises great results is found in the experimental workings work-ings of THI BI-METALLIC SMELTER at the old La Plata site.
