Show I NA NATIONAL I AFFAIRS Reviewed by CARTER FIELD FJELD Unnecessary ivoun were opened at the Republican convention according to Carter Field Bitterness however ever is not against TT men melt Syndicate Service WASHINGTON Wounds Wounds of this Republican national convention will plague the party throughout the presidential campaign This is the themore themore more extraordinary in that it is en en- entirely entirely within the realm of possibility that events between now and elec elec- election election election tion may be such that the issues on which the wounds were made will disappear For example all the bitterness about joining the allies in the war This writer is still sUU hoping for a mir mir- acle a hope based on the ota age tenacity of the British people but the cold fact is that our own ex ex- experts experts ex- ex experts in confidential reports based on the observation of our army and navy representatives abroad doubt if Britain can hold out much over overa a month after the th Nazis start their real attack Leaving our wishes whatever they may be to one side suppose this happens What will then be be- become become become come of petty disputes over whether er the President aided the allies more than he should Is it not more likely that the majority of the pea peo people pIe of this country will bitterly re re- regret regret re- re regret gret that we did not aid them more and sooner Let us consider another possibility ity ity that that the miracle happens and Britain is still fighting desperately against superior forces with utter conquest a possibility or a probability probability probability ability as the case may be THAT'S A QUESTION What will be the attitude of most of the people in this country then as election approaches toward the tlc politicians who bitterly assailed President Roosevelt for not having been coldly neutral The whole situation is pathetic from an time old politicians politician's stand stand- standpoint standpoint point poin because it was so 4 sary The Republicans did not have to make helping the allies or keeping out of war war the issue They could have concentrated on our own lack of preparedness despite the fact that more than has been spent on national defense since Roosevelt entered the White House It is perfectly true that the ad ad- administration administration ministration can make a logical de de- defense defense defense for that But at the moment we are thinking in terms of politics po and not logic It is frequently a mistake to mix the two are not always logical in politics In fact they rather seldom are It would be terribly difficult for forthe forthe forthe the Democrats to defend that of defense spending in view of the administrations administration's own admission admission admission sion that we are woefully unprepared unprepared unprepared pared and now ow really need to spend billions for defense BITTERNESS HANGS GS ON Bitterness galore hangs over from the Philadelphia convention but amazingly little is directed at Wen Wen- Wendell Wendell Wendell dell Willkie or any of his supporters in the fight which ended with his nomination Naturally the Taft people are bit bit- bitter bitter bitter ter not at Willkie Winkle but at the leaders le ders they had counted on for the fifth fifth- ballot showing they expected to re- re result re re- result result sult in victory Specifically the Taft people had counted on Joe Pew to deliver 50 odd votes from Penn Penn- sylvania They had counted on Alf All M. M Landon to deliver 18 votes of Kansas They had counted on Her Her- Herbert Herbert Herbert bert Hoover for scattering votes from all over the country And finally they had counted on Senator Arthur H. H to deliver not only the 38 votes of Michigan but scattering delegates in other dele dele- What the Taft people never real real- realized apparently was that of this particular group of leaders only one All Alf Al Landon really dominated Ills His l is delegation OUSTED HAMILTON HAMU TON Landon had shown shoD his strength in ina ina ina a delegation caucus when all the prestige of John Hamilton as na na- national na- na national chairman was not enough to induce the Kansas delegates to re- re reelect reelect reelect elect Hamilton as national committeeman commit- commit committeeman committeeman teeman from the Sunflower sun ower state Landon wanted Hamilton thrown out and thrown out he was Landon came to Philadelphia strongly of the opinion that Willkie should not be nominated He was inclined to favor Taft But when the Taft lieutenants not realizing the bitter enmity between Landon and Hoover kept telling Landon how much Hoover was helping Taft Landon began to fear that Hoover would be the power behind the throne In the Taft campaign if Taft were nominated and in his adminis adminis- administration if he should be elected That was no dish for Landon so so when Dewey was eliminated ted and the fight narrowed to Taft and Willkie he threw the 18 Kansas votes to the victor Just lust why the Taft people counted on may never be made public It was well known in Wash Wash- Washington Washington ington for 10 days before the con con- convention that if the Michigan sena- sena senator senator senator tor could not get the for himself he would prefer The Taft of o course Sew knew I 4 t |
