Show THE DEFEAT OF THE BONDS. The Times believes the people of Salt Lake county made a grave mistake yesterday in defeating the bond proposition. propo-sition. The best interests of this city and ' county demand that the great public building recently began shall be carried forward to speedy completion. The dignity of this city and county demands it; home labor would be greatly benefitted bene-fitted byit; all the channels of trade would be quickened by the expenditure expendi-ture of the money at a time when general gen-eral business is dull. We have not heard a single worthy Argument against the proposition, and we believe the arguments in its favor are conclusive. Under these circumstances circum-stances the defeat of this progressive measure is deplorable. Where lies the blame for this blun-SerV blun-SerV A morning sheet lays it upon the Mormon church. This charge, however, how-ever, is made only from force of habit. It rests upon no substantial ground. Less than one-eighth of the total vote was polled, and if the Mormon church etill has an influence in politics, and had any well-detined purpose to defeat the bonds, it is certainly to be believed that it would have made a far better showing than that. The newspaper that makes this charge still has some influence in politics poli-tics and did Dot exert it in favor of the proposition, or, if it did, then its in-; fluence .is limited to about 638 votes. The fact is that the bonds were baaten by General Indifference. He is a commander com-mander who has won too many victories victor-ies in this community. It is high time that he was routed, horse, foot and dragoons. The Times believes that the people of this county, upon a fair and vigorous presentation of the question, will vote overwhelmingly in favor of completing this grand public building without further fur-ther delay. It urges the county court to submit the question again to the people at the earliest practicable moment. mo-ment. If the court will take this action, The Times guarantees here and now that every voter in Salt Lake county shall hear of the proposition and all the arguments ar-guments in its favor, and that if the bonds are beaten then it shall be in the face of one of the prettiest fights ever seen in this neighborhood. We believe the public interests demand de-mand that the question should again be submitted without delay, and that every man in Salt Lake county who has a grain of publio spirit or civic pride should take off his coat and work for the proposition. |
