The new "ear dawns on Utah wilh promises of prosperity mid plenty, and her peoplo welcome with bravo hearts and strong hopes. The year promises Salt Lake City an era of growth such as has He vet been known in tho west. Natural gas will double her population before anethor Xew Year's day has rolled around, anil more than double her wealth. Under the magic touch of that cbeap fuel factories i numerable will spring p. The natural resources of the territory will COmS tO the front and the products of Utah will be found In every market of the west. Another promise of the new year is a railroad to Ueop Creek that wili open up she rich mineral realms of that district, 't his will add thousands to the population of tho territory and .millions to its wealth. With these enterprises, and the won-derf-growth which they will cause, will come statehood. Pittsburg Commerolal-Gazett- A tonimerclal journal in Baltimore, stntes that orders for iiOtUHKl barrtds of llnur had been thrown into that market for shipment to Cuba aud the Spanish West Indies. The reciprocity arrangoment lietwcen tlie I'nitod States and Spain, whereby the duty ou Hour will bo reduced from (.').tU.J to $1, takes t'fTecl January 1st, and the above, named heavy order Is due to this treaty. New fork and New Orleans (tour exports have heeii similarly stimulated, and in this one item of flout the country Will be hundreds of thousands of dollars hetcr off by reason of he reciprocity provision of tho McKiu-le- Mil. The results of the reciprocal convci.iton with Hr.izil are eoually fyitijtf . The first live months followlm," the date when that treaty took effc. t the exports frcun this country bowed an Increase of (1,160,680 over the ctrrcsporidintt period ol last ywt. The arrangement with Spain went Into only partial effect September I, mid (He"' niefeasc of our cip.irts on seventeen articles alTeeted, up to Notember I, w as 1820,870. This docs not include Hour, which, as stated, is not af-- f acted until January 1, Wilh such benctiti resulting from partial and brief operation, we can anticipate ti.e j;rcat impetus which our commerce will receive w hen the full and pi'imuient schedules go into effect July 1, The success of the reciprocity is proving a source of confusion to the They are at a los- - to know how to discount. When the measure was lirst enacted they charac-terized it as humbug. Practical results have made impossible to keep up this line of at-tack. 'I heir next resort wm to declare that reciprocity was only a modified form ol free trade, and they asked if free evihanife with Latin America was a ir. ml thing, why is not a free es hangc with the rest of the w orld a better thing? And, lastly, they are now urging an oujoctlon that is strangely Incon-sistent with the original war-cr- of recipro-city humbug. They argue that such as those now existing work to the disadvantage of Brazil and the other southern countries, nnd they will terminate the treaties at an early day. That is, which at lirst was denounced as a liuiiibiu' and a delusion, is now admitted to be so beneficial tu the United States as to work Inequalities to the other countries, umi thev will therefore demand the abroga-tion of the treaties. Tics absurdly treatment of the question show s to what extent the practical success of reciprocity has con founded the free traders. The truth la that tin- cimmercc of Brazil ami the Spanish West Indies has been stimulated equally wilh that of the United Slates Both par-ties to the contract are highly pleased with iu success. And this cheapening of non-competitive products, tea, sugar, coffee, mo. lasses, hides, etc., and the consequent in our exports and imports, is ae. couiplisheil without crippling our industries, which would be the result if our markets were throw n open to Europe in order t lip t foreign goods eou'd come into equal com-petition w iili similar goods which we pro-duce at home. Herein is th difference dcmacratlc free trade and republii ait protection wilh its handmaid, reciprocity. Truly, reciprocity Is confounding our cue-mies. THF I KHKI AKV KI.LCTION. There will lie a city election in Feb-ruary. It is only six wuoks off hut the visible signs of tha coming contest are not us yet very numerous, l'arty land-- era arc, however, busy, umi candidates nro uiiMims. There is a iuterost manifested , thai makes it very eertitiu that there will be a heavy vote. Indeed, from present indications there will be no vote. I'.veryniun entitled to a voice in the alTuirs of the city will lie at the polls and it is the duty ol every good citizen to .see that no man not entitled to deposit a ballot has an opportunity to do so, It, is certain that there will be ni least two tickets in the field the liberals and democrats both announcing that fact. There was one time an impression abroad that there was a republican party, in favor of di-vision on national party line, in exist-ence in this city, but tho vote of Sail Lake in an election not so far distant as to have escaped the memory of loan., seems to hue demonstrated that thi ia not the case. There were at that election :it)ii votes east by members ol' the republican party referred to. It Is now Intimated that this same parly will have a ticket iu the field tor the February election. This is, however, hardly to be expected, .Several who were among iis prominent members ore no longer with it, although the parly did score a point before the national republican committee. ll appears to us that wit once heard of an independent candidate lor mayor and we have also heard something of a working men's ticket. It is probable, however, that neither will materialize. There lias been considerable gossip about the two tiakots of which we are sure. No one will challenge the fact that the democratic party of this city is largely composed of the members of the late people's patty. They didn't go to tho tlivisiouist republicans at least. Yet in spile of this fact it is whispered the democratic ticket will be composed largely of gentiles. Much more iuterest is however, be-trayed iu the personnel of the ticket that will be put in the field by the liberal party. Tho men who will be the can-didates for mayor and for city marshal are th" ones whose names every one is waiting for. They should he good men they must be. It has been talked about on the streets lor some time that one of these men had already been decided on. that events that hate since occurred, and which would make his nomination in-advisable, would not change that de-cision That in fact ho was backed by nn influence strong ououghto forco him upon the convention. Wo doubt this. Another rumor has reached our oar in regard to the man who is to head the liberal ticket. It is a rumor that is calculated to cause a smile, for the promises of liberal leaders hao been that he should be the "best man for the place." This man would not fill the bill aud w hile he would probably be elected should ho be lucky enough to get the nomination, it would be a very ill-at- ised action. v. The Itooin of Cheap Sue.ur. Now Vor. He. order.
