Sights and Eocnea in and Around th Interraountain Metropolis Infor-mation for Oar Viaiton. i 6TJIDE TO THE TOUBHT. Bait Lake'i Location. Attractioni aad Climate Garfield Eeaoh and Otatr Pkcej of Int8reiU The city of Salt Lake has a hM ayhich reaches around the world. The population is about Oo.OOO, and is at a rapid rate. It is situated at the base of the Wasatch mountain in a lovely valley, rich iu agricultural re-sources and is eighteen miles distant from Great Salt Lake. Its-- elevation above sea level is 4,350 feet. There are nianv points of interest to visitors in the city ' and near it. Here are some of them: The Temple. Tlii- - magnificent cream-whit- e granite struct tire was began April G, 1858. It is 100x300 feet, the walls are 100 feet high, and the lowers, when completed, ayiU lie 200 feet he'ght Over $3 500,000 have been expended on the temple, and It is now nearing completion. In the sauic - uare with the temple is the spa-cious building called The Tabaruaelo. Here are held the services of the mor-mon church and these are attended even Sunday by an immense congrega-tion of people, both mormon and gen-tile The structure is oval in shape, seventy rive feet high and XaOxloO feet in length and breadth. It hast a seating caparity of 12,000 people, and hero may be heard what is claimed to be the lin-es- t organ in the world. Patti oucesang in the tabernacle, aad demonstrated that its acoustic powers are cry line. The tta-rd- H. use or Amelia palace, was built by Brigham Toting who willed that it could bo the residence of his favorite wife. Amelia Folsotn Young, but since his death it has been used as the official residence of dignitaries of the church. Brigham koiug'i Heetdaoe known as the Bee-Hiv- e and the Lion House are structures, curious from associations. These are situated in what was once Brigham Young's domain, all of which has passed into other hands, save the large lot in in which is Brigham Young's grave. The post commands a wide view of the citv and beyond where Great Salt Lake lies molten sil-ver at the foot of the western moun-tains. Rack's Hot Springi are in the northern part of the city about three miles from the business center, They issue from the baye of the moun-- ; tains, and are regarded as a very valua-ble aid in oases of rheumatism dyspep-sia and scrofulla. The waters are u;ed both internally and externally, and there is an excellent bath house and necessary appointment for the comforf of patients. Tb Warm Snlphar 8prDffi are between the Hot Springs and the city, about one mile from the postoflice. There is a good hotel and comfortabls bath house in connection with the springs, and they can be reached by street railway. Th Muoatataa are unsurp:8ecd in magnificent conons. and at leant a dozen of the grandest are within reach of the city. These invite the tourist to spend day9. week or months among their wild recesses to fish, to hunt, lo scale the peak3 and ridges, and to gather wild flowers by the mossy springs, beneath the shade of umbrageous pines. Big Cottonwood canon should be seen by every tourist, Here are lake Mary and Martha from which Hows the turbulent Cottonwood river; and at the base of the mountains are lakes Blanche, Florence and Lilian, Besides these arc Mills creek, Parley's Emigration, and City Creek Canons, all extremely picturesque and delightfully comautfo. Plaaaaal Dr.TM abound in scores around the outskirts of the city; along the quiet country roads, anil through the lanes dividing meadews of rich green alfalfa and fields of grain; while the majestic mountains are never entirely lost sight of. From under the branches of trees and above hedges of the wild dog-ros- e glimpses are caught of snow covered peaks. A drive to Fort Douglas, and then a mile further out to the mouth of Emigration oanou is almost delightful. It was here that the ight of the mormon pioneers first made glad by the vast expanse of Salt Lake valley suddenly hurst upon ttMm, on the 24th of July, 1847. Th 8HM Salt I.a!i.
