Show 2 THE SALT LAKE TIMES: j R1L 29, 1892. 1 VP i iWv WHY? The Board of Education last night denied the request of a committee of teachers for the use of the High school room for a lecture on pedagogy by Dr. Gobjdy of the Ohio university. This seems to us a very unusual proceeding and we would like to know the whys and wherefores. If Dr. Gordy is a traveling pettifogger, the action of the hoard is perfectly justified, but the fact that he is connected with the Ohio university leaves the inference that he is an educator of high standing, and we can see- - no good reason for the denial of the request. Sleep is the one thing that we cannot live without. It brings us hope, the only-thin- g that makes life endurable. Sleep and hope; they go hand in hand, and they alone bring relief in trouble. After sleep comes again hope. When hope has lied, sleep brings back renewed strength and hope again reappears. Sleep brings us pictures of joys past and to come that even hope is power-less to show. Sleep shows us all the crooked lines in our life picture straightened out and made perfect, and brings to our side those who are too far away for even long-arme- d hope to reach. Sleep can even restore to us those who are in death's cold arms. Islo greater boon is given to man by a good God than sleep. EVEKTTHING is In favor of the pre-sumption that the mooted line of sew -- age between the city and lake was a talk for time. The author of the mo-tion, as do the people of Salt L.ak-know- , that it's execution or any attempt to execute it, would be resisted with shot guns. Of 23,021 births in Chicago last year, the fathers of only 5286 were Ameri-cans that is. born in the United States while the remaining 17,735 were born in foreign countries. Of the mothers of these children, ("'217 were Americans, as against 5108 Germans and 1274 Irish, This indicates that the number of men of foreign birth who married women born in the United States is large. In American births the females outnumber the males, but the number of male im- - migrants is greater than tho number of females. Hakky Vane Milbank. a second in the late vocal embroglio, has vindicated the character of the late Fox-Borrow- e meeting at the muzzle of a six-shoot- Well, after all, American "aristocracy" is forced to lean on the mother country for manhood and pluck. It would appear that the recent tip to Mohan by a colleague had accom-plished some wholesome effects. Mohan was sent to the council for business, not for bombast, and if he will bear this in mind he will doubtless develop into a useful piece of machinery. Maksiial Jannex and his vigilant department are to be congratulated on the "changed conditions" that stand out so boldly in a comparison between the present and the past. Disaffection never piloted a crew into safe harbor in its life, and so long as harmony reigns, the present excellent condition of aft'airs may be depended on. The people of Zion cannot adopt a policy too prodigal in the encourage-ment of those who at the expense of time aud money are tapping the mons-ter meters of gas and oil that underlie this valley, and whose liberation is the signal for a manufacturing era that must bring in its train a troop of grandest results. RACING ON liKHiil A M STREET. The Times has in the past week re-ceived several communications pro-testing against the Sunday racing nuisance on Brigham street, and has several times called the attention of the authorities to the abuse. It is about time that some action was taken. There i a city ordinance with reference to lust driving, and it is about time that it u as enforced. This racing has been going on for some time, much to the annoyance of the citizens of that sec-tion. It is too dangerous for comfort, and the only surprise is that some one has not been hurt before this time. We hope to see the practice stopped at !nv. There is no excuse for such scandalous abuses. THK 11KK TRAPS. The lire' aud building inspectors are to be commended for the energy with which they a,re prosecuting the war on the old frame shauties that occupy such prominent positions in many of the business blocks of the city. Many of these old shacks have stood for a gen-eration, and their dry and rotten old rafters anil weather-beate- n board walls are an ever present menace. They are holding out inviting hands to lire, and threaten the safety of the line business blocks that rise up by their sides. Their presence is what has kept the insurance rates so high, and their removal ought to appeal to the underwriters, and a substantial reduction should follow. These old shacks are the only excuse for the exorbitant rates that now pre-vail in Zion. To tho credit of the business enter-prise of Zion's citizens, however, be it sail that few of these old fire-trap- s are the property of individuals. They mostly belong to estates, and we are glad to see the authorities force the proverbially slow-goin- g trustee into a bit of enterprise. !. -- fll Notice. EREKSON, , ISAAC D. EREKSON, Administrators of the estate of Peter XJrekson, de-ceased. April Mth, 1892. A BILLION IN EXPORTS. The country has recently heard a good deal of blather about "the billion dollar congress," as applied to the con-gress that was responsible for the McKinley tariff law and its reciprocity provisions. It has been freely charged that that law would restrict trade with foreign countries. The statistics of American foreigu commerce for the past year do not bear put the d democratic predictions. Uu the other hand, they prove conclusive that American foreign commerce has reached the highest point ever known! For the twelve months ending with March last, the value of our exports reached the unprecedented aggregate of Hf006,884,50ft. In the value of exports aloue, for March, 18112, there was an in-crease compared with the same month of ISM of $0,504, 739, and of $9,193,153 over the same periop of 18'JO. This is a most ext aordinary showing, far beyond the most sanguine expectations. Tho exports of the twelve months exceed thoe of the corresponding mouths of the prior year by the Large sum of $134,- - The totai value of the imports for the 3'ear was I8&S,600,304, aud the total value of this country's foreigu com-merce, imports aud exports combined, for the year, was 11,845,348,001, so that this is almost a two billion dollar coun-try. The exports have exceeded the imports by the large sum of $109,225,921, m that the balance of trade is largely in our favor. Another important fact is that the balance of merchandise im-ported lice of duty was $4G1,4?3,!23, while the dutiable imports amounted to only 1875,585,009. In other words the free merchandise was 55.13 per cent of the w hole, as against 37.01 per cent for lite preceding twelve months. Figures like these reflect infinite cred-it upon the d "billion dollar coa-gf4- ft Marshal's Sale.
