Show Society and Money. From the New York Sun. Society and money are anonymous terms in this part of the world. Joseph Howard. This is a striking evidence of that unreflecting unre-flecting state Into which even a veteran philosopher phi-losopher may lapse. What is known as society, so-ciety, meaning tho most conspicuous circle of society, has always been made up of rich feople since the world began, in all lands, rom the days of robber barons to commercial commer-cial magnates the showing is the same. The aristocratic idea has been sometimes built up, but that has always begun with money and never can survive its loss, or the competition com-petition of greater wealth. The most splendid splen-did society is always the most important in the long run, and neither birth, power, nor intellect can prevail against it in ultimately monopolizing the conventional title 'society.' While the Knickerbockers of New York and the Puritans of Boston kept the prestige of greater possessions they were at the teip, but each of these interesting groups has had its day and gone down before the advance of more imposing fortunes and superior equipment equip-ment for social grandeur. There is a good deal of loose talk about money among people peo-ple who talk more than think. i 1 .. j.-.: |
