Show A VERY STRANGE STORY. A Man Shoots Himself Because of Hopeless Hope-less Love lor Another tan Is It a Tale of indescribable I.ust? ' St. Loi is, Feb. 25. That the peculiarities of the Alice Mitchell. Freda Ward case at Memphis are not confined to the feminine sex was demonstrated by the suicide here of Dr. E. T. Breedlove of Baltimore, Md. Yesterday morning the inmates of Hursts hotel were startled by a oistol shot. A few seconds later Isaac M. .ludsou rushed down the stairs and informed the proprietor that Dr. Breedlove had just shot himself. Hurst at once rushed to the room where he found Brecdlovo's dead body. The man had shot himself in the right temple, and death was ' evidently instantaneous. At the police station Judson said he was In the room when Breedlove shot himself, and gave the cause of the act as despondency and a strange attachment to himself (Judson). (Jud-son). This latter remark was most significant, signifi-cant, when taken in connection with a letter found among the dead man's effects. It says in part: "I came intending tirst to kill you, then myself. I shall only make an end Of mv own miserable existence. My love for you haB been my ruin. I can no more live apart from you than tly. There is but one thing I would have, and that is to ptss the remainder of my life in your presence. I shall do that anyhow, for to die iu your arms relieves death of half its terrors. It is Wuel for men to do this act, for it will blight your life. I should be more cruel to myself to try to live without you. "Ton have done all but the one right and effective thing to save and make me, but it bus all failed. I would gladly beg, steal, do anything, forego riches, forget friends, home, kindred, for a life of blissful association associa-tion with you. The blow will probably kill my mother; I shulder to think of it We might have been happy together had it not been for your rich friends, your high social and business standing, your high ideas of morality, w hich you inner till. But it is too late, and must come. . "Good-bye, Isaac; I won't wish you happiness; happi-ness; you will never have that again, aud yon will follow in my footsteps sometime. Men of our natures and sins must have their punishment, and ours come In terrible shape. You are mine in the sight, of heaven, and no family ties can claim you from me and death. I have loved you belter than you have ever or ever will be loved again. Pray for my soul. Amen." Scraps of other letters of tho same tenor were found in the room. Judson says he has been an intimate friend ol ihe suicide. For some time past Breedlove has been depressed de-pressed iu mind over financial matters and his failure to establish himself in his pro. Cession. Judson went to the h del to see Breedlove, who was about to leave on a visit to Baltimore. As he entered the room tho doctor handed him a letter, and while ho was reading it, he heard the fatal shot. The parents of the suicide live in Fort Smith, Ark. - . m |
