Show FEARS OF FLOODS. Fresh Rains Will Cause the Missouri River to Rise Above the Recent Hig'h Stage. NEARLY A WATERSPOUT IN TEXAS Thousands of A eras of Land Flooded, Crops Ruined and Railroads Washed Out. St. Louis, May 18. Reports from the Missouri river from Kansas City to the mouth say it is falling slowly, but recent rains in Kansas arc expected to start a rise which will carry It above the recent high stage. ALMOST A WATERSPOUT. Den-json, Tex., May Is Almost a waterspout water-spout visited this section yesterday. All streams overflowed their banks. Thousands of acres of lands are flooded, the railroads washed out. On the Choctaw river, two miles wide, mauv families had to move to higher ground. Hundreds of head of stock were drowned. The Red river rose ten feet a:ul is still rising rapidly. Not half a crop of corn or cotton will be raised. DKOWNED IN SIOUX CITY. Sioux City, la., May IS. The flood of the river is sweeping through the city a raging torrent half a mile wide. Two hundred houses are wholly or partially submerged. It is known that nine persona were drowned and it is feared many more. Railroad Rail-road depots, packing houses, many ;aetories are under water, it is the worst flood ever known here. Reports from the country indicate in-dicate much other damage. IKS MOINES KIVEK ON THE RAM PAGE. Fort Dodge, la., May IS. The Hood gates of heaven opened again last night. An immense im-mense amount of damage has been done. The Des Moines river rose eight inches and is now rising two inches an hour. Little Sioux valley is under water. It is feared the loss of life is heavy. MANY LIVES LOST. Omaha, May IS. Trains began running over the Union Pacific bridge this morning. Trains from the west, north and south were delayed by washouts. It is reported many lives were lost in a cloudburst at Sioux City, but the wires are down and particulars unobtainable. un-obtainable. THE MISSOURI. Kansas Citt, Mo., May 18. The Missouri river is still rising. A repetition of last week's flood is confidentially expected. A r.sc of ten inches since yesterday occurred. Heavy rains fell throughout Kansas last night. The Kaw is again on the rampage in that state. THE ARKANSAS. J'ine Bluff, Ark., May Is. The Arkansas f river has riseu five inches since last night. Five huudred men are at work on the levee below, but it will be impossible to hold it any longer than today. Much land is already al-ready overflowed. THE DES MOINES 11IVEK. Ottumwa, la.. May IS. The water in the Des Moines river reached the highest point since the great flood of 1851. The electric light plant is shut down, which will leave the city in darkness tonight. THE KAW. Lawrence. Kan., May 18. The Kaw riyer has risen over three teet since yesterday, which is only ten inches below the apex of Inst week's flood. The indications are that it will exceed that mark. GKEAT DAMAGE IN ST. LOUIS. St. Louis, May Is. The great Bowman flyke east f St. Louis is now under water, ail railroad yards are flooded and the freight depot is deep in water. The damage has been enormous. |
