Show Tammany is now busy naturalizing all the ignorant foreigners that can be found in the metropolis, Thousands of the most densely ignorant and debased human beings are being converted into citizens for election purposes. Tammany's Tam-many's strong hold is its ability to control and use the ignorant for-foreign for-foreign element; and the methods now being practiced by that organization should serve to awaken the people to the necessity for sweeping changes in our naturalization laws. Next year the same machinery will be set in motion to elect a president of the United States, and it is not impossible that the election elec-tion will be decided by the votes of men who are not now in the country and who never will understand the principles princi-ples of our government or the duties of citizenship under its flag. A report comes from southern Russia Rus-sia that the edict against the Jews has been suspended. A few days ago the dispatches stated that the Jewish bankers bank-ers of Berlin "were actively opposing the loan which the czar has been endeavoring en-deavoring to negotiate. Their opposition opposi-tion resulted from the persecution of their brethren in Russia, and it is probable prob-able that the czar has determined to make some concessions in order to get the money that he so badly needs. Money for Russia means war in the near future; and so the granting of relief re-lief to the oppressed Jews may lead to far more tragic occurrences than those which have been reported in connection with the expulsion of that race from Russian territory. People haTe always said that there was at least one thing which human ingenuity in-genuity could not accomplish the damming of Niagara; but it is now seriously se-riously proposed to enter upon such an undertaking. ,ii claimed that.he level of the greajt'lu ?s is fayg tVy , an extent as to threaten iu.v4gatiojB some points in the near future. To obviate ob-viate the threatened danger, it is pi'o-posed pi'o-posed to dam the -upper end of the Niagara river, contracting the outlet from the lake so as to raise the water. The plan is not to throw a dam across the river but to build out from either shore so as to diminish the flow of water. The arrival of the carload of sugar from the Lehi works marked an important im-portant era in the history of Utah's industries. in-dustries. The success of this business means that millions of dollars will be saved to the territory which would otherwise have been sent away for this article. The money will be distributed among farmers and workmen, and will be used by them in purchasing supplies from the merchants of their vicinity. The value of the sugar consumed by a quarter of a million of people is enormous, enor-mous, and there seems to be no reason whv the lartrer part of the home de- mand should not be supplied from the Utah product. Fable tells us that the very early sons of Rome were nurtured by a wolf. The American hog now becomes an equally important beast to the modern mod-ern inhabitants of the Eternal City. The prohibition against him has been removed and the Italians will be able to eat bacon without limit, if they can scrape together enough money with which to pay the American farmers for it. The dispatches announce that Balfour Bal-four has been made government leader in the commons. His elevation to that place will have the elTect of making party discussions more acrimonious, as it will act like a red rag upon the opposition.. |
