A party of Salt Lake ladies and gentlemen, gen-tlemen, bent on securing a portion of the ozone and other climatic appurtenances appurten-ances abounding at tho lakes at the head of City Creek canyon, had an exciting ex-citing experience yesterday afternoon. The road on the summit above the headwaters of the creek is in an almost impassible condition, full of big boulders bould-ers and limbs and stumps of trees. The party were returning to town, and when on one of the steepest parts of the road one of tho animals balked. There was no brake on the wagon, and the horses had been holding it Dack ail the way down, but it was noticed that they were getting excited and unruly. Immediately on the balking of his male the other horse gave a lunge and turew the tongue ami neck-yoke over the head of the balky animal, aud got to the opposite side and partly in front of the brute. The gentiemen cried to the ladies to jump out. The agility and dispatch with which they proceeded to do so is to be commended. One gentleman succeeded in quieting the horses and rolling boulders under the wheels. The harness hail to bo cut in several places, but finally all was repaired re-paired antl another stRt't made, the party arriving home without further mishap. The presence of mind of the horse in jumping in front of the balky animal was the (inly thing that saved tho party from being horribly injured and perhaps per-haps some of them 'killed, as at tho foot of the hill, where the road turned to tho right, was a jump-off about fifty feet down, all boulders and stumps of trees, lieyoud a few slight scratches sustained by the ladies in jumping from the wagon, none were injured, but they will remember the oocurreuce for some time. j I |
