A number of petitions, were read and disposed of. The board of equalization reported a list of indigent porsous whoso taxes had been inquired into and recommended that they be remitted. The report was adopted on the motion of Councilman Kurrick. The application of 1'. L. Johnson for a position on the police force was re-ferred to tho mayor. Sewer Superintendent Vanllouten submitted that a dura had been across the surplus canal, di-verting the vh er from the canal to the ditch, thus giving rise to considerable complaint. The mattor was referred to the committee on irrigation, and 8ewerago. City Treasurer Joe Waldan called at-tention to tho resignation of George N. liowen, deputy treasurer, and recfim-mendu- d that M. K. Sowlcs be eonlirmed as his successor. The nomination was submitted but was rejected by a vote of 0 to 5. Hobson Wilkinson were allowed until November 1st to complete work Parley's canon conduit. Kawlins end others with reference to tho condi-tion of First street, and tha putitiou of Kelsev & Gillespie askiDR for the grad-ing of Sccoml South street from Sixth V3t to tho Jordan. Adopted. Tho water master's report was found to be corract and approved. A number of retail liquor licenses wore granted. An ordinance relating to the rise of furnaces was then introduced and passed. It provides that any propri-etor, lessee or occupant, en-gineer or lireman of any build-ing in which a boiler is or may be used for generating steam or electricity who shall permit or allow dense smoke to issue or be emitted from the chim-ney or chimneys thereof used in con-nection with such boiler, etc., within the corporate limits of Salt Lake City shall bo guilty cf a misdemeanor, and thai!, upon conviction, fur every such ollense be lined in a sum not lci?s than 45 nor more than $50, aud each day in which such smoke is permitted to Usuo shall constitute a separate oflense. Provided, however, that the penalty herein provided shall not apply in any case where the lirtman, engineer, owner, lessee or occupant has supplied such building with and shall have in use a sutiicicnt device for the consump-tion or prevention of smoko. And provided further, that this ordinance shall bo held to apply only to such buildings in which may be used or operated a boiler or boilers which, either singly or in batteries, are of the capacity of fifty horse power or over.
