I The Province of Rio Grande de Sul Declares De-clares Its Iudependence A Grandson Grand-son of Dora Pedro on His Way to Brazil to Claim the Throne. London, Nor. 0. Dispatches received here ' today from Bcrnambuco show the trouble iu Brazil is approaching n acute crisis, and there is much anxiety expressed in financial and commercial circles rcgard-i rcgard-i ing the outcome of Fonscca's actiou in dissolving dis-solving congress, and again in the role of dictator. Grave doubts are exr '-ised as to the success of this move. These dispatches state that from the province prov-ince of Kio Grande De Dal comes iatelli- j geuce to the effect that the local government gov-ernment has refused to acquiesce in the as- I 6Uinption by Da Fonseca of the pov. or of . dictator, and has declared the iudependence of the province. The dispatches further j state that there is great discontent throughout through-out all the provinces of Brazil. New Yorx. Nov. 9. The Ji-raT s correspondent corre-spondent at Kio de Janeiro sends the following: follow-ing: It is reported here today that August t, one of the grandsons of Dom Pedro, the ex-eniperor ex-eniperor of Brazil, and an officer in the Austrian Aus-trian naTy, is on board a corvette v hich is expected to arrive heie in a few day.-. The rumor has increased the excitement that was caused by the dissolution of congress con-gress and President Fonseca's proclamation of himself as dictator. Fonseca' a followers make use of it to justify his recent acts, and say that it proves Lis statement that the enemies of the republic have teen engaged in a widespread conspiracy to restore imperial im-perial rule. Prince Augusto is the eldest sou of Dom Pedro's youuzer daughter, Leopoldiua. who married Prince Augusto of the, house of Saxe-Coburg. she died in 1S1, leaving four sons. Pedro. Augusto, Jose, and Luia. Augusto was born near ltio in March, ltki. He is nine years the senior of Prince Pedro, tne oldest son of Princess Y-abfl, Dom Pedro's other daughter, and O.unt D'F.u. Dom Pedro looked upon Augusio until 175 as his heir presumptive. Augusto was the favorite grandson of the aged emperor, whose only sons died respectively in 1S1T and 1S. I For twelve vcars after her marriage Ysabel had no children, and hence it was the oldest born of her younger sister who came to be regarded as heir to the throne. These facts are well known to the Brazilians, and the republicans consequently have taken alarm at the reported approach cf young Augusto. They see in him the hope of the monarchist, and believe that be has been selected to lead the imperialist rising, because of his naval training, his age, the sentiment the old emperor felt for him, and the affection the Brazilian nation entertained for him years ago on that account. Ysabel's eldest son, Pedro, is only in his 17th year, and could hardly be expected to play the role of leader in a revolution. Prince Augusto has a fine presence and charming manners, and is well educated. If report is true about bis presence aboard the Corvette, trouble will undoubtedly follow bis landing in Brazil. |
