Show FROM SPANiSH FORK. The First l'olilir.il Mr.run Ever Held In Thai City. Special correspondence to The Times. Spanish Fokk, June 10. Properly speaking the first political tnee'ting ever held iu thi city was a republican meeting meet-ing which took place in the city hall last night, with Hon. George D. Snell as chairman and Joseph H. Rees, secretary. secre-tary. The call from the central republican repub-lican committee was read by John M. Zane, amidst great applause, followed by an emphatic speech by John II. Smith, amidst great applause, pictured out to the audience the principles of republicanism, re-publicanism, showing plainly that the republicans had invariably shown more justice to the mormons than tbe democrats demo-crats had done, even though the latter fully believed that the mormons were their political friends. Ho referred to the bill prepared by John Randolph Tucker, & (.launch democrat which if passed, would not only hae disfranchised disfran-chised every mormon, but placed the legislature of Utah entirely iu the liaud of an appointed commission, showing plainly liiat it was due only to the great manhood of Senator Edmunds that it did not become a law, and that the mormons had a reason to be thankful j to the Vermont republican statesman for tho political rights they enjoy at the present. John M. Zane, .lohi Morgan, Mr. Whitecotton, John E. Booth anil James Sharp each made a characteristic and powerful speech, explaining republican principles, and each ouo was warmly KI" v, lll.ltl.o U1CU till interrupt the speakers, but in turn were masterly sat down on. Thore are few public meetings that am so earnestly enjoyed as this one was, aud the sincerity sin-cerity which prevailed seemed to be almost unanimous. A few more such gatherings are to bo desired, and as tho lirst republican gathering in Spanish F'ork wss such that our spacious city hall could uot coutain near all those present, and the good satistiaetion that generally prevailed, pre-vailed, ft is reasonable to think that republicanism will take good roots in the progressive minds of the Spanish F'orkers. |
