Mr. Zaue trounced th liberal who bad o little political sense as to look with disfavor on the present movement. All tho speakers insisted on the Ameri-can doctrine of protection, citing facts and ligures, using argument and rea-son to prove their position. Kspecially they Hhmveit the bad faith ami dema-gogic instincts of thu democracy, who were for the lead tariil and the wool schedule iu Utah when they ot into the county, but wet ifee iradersevery-wher- e else. The sitituation in 1'aysou show what the republican patty can do iu Utah simply by puttiug theimido of the ques-tion before the. voters. The liberals are generally called republicans be-cause they suppose, that the republican party is opposed to the church, ihe people's party ate supposed to be dem-ocrats lor exactly the contrary reason. As a iiiallsr of (act both libera! and people's party men have never giveu the question serious thought, and out in tno settleiiients so far as political training is concerned, liberals and peo-ple purty men are exactly on a par. l'rot Lilinrnls J)m tlttril The liberals of I'rovo held a meeting Saturday nijht in the court house. Chairman Stores called the meeting to order and tendered his resignation as chairman of the city committee. The resignation was accepted. Then the fun began. Dr. Shores nominated K. S. Hines for the position. Mr. Hints decliued. Mr. A. G. Sutherland was nominated and declined. Then John J.. Jlills was nominated as chairman and elected, but Mr. Hills said: "You would not hear my protest before the motion was put, now 1 will not act." Tinally, however, Elmer H. Jones con-sented to act as temporary chairman. The ccretary then read tiie resolu-tions passed by the county committee, and Judge Jones moved that they be accepted by fiis meeting. Dr. fthuu ottered an amendment, iu which iie stated that it the republicans and dem-ocrats showed fairness iu making up their ticket, that the liberal party give them their nearly support. Spoeche vere made by Dr. Shores, Judge J. D. Jones, A. G. Sutherland, John E. Hills, Ephriam Homer, William S. Aly ton und George Sutherland. Ar. Sutheriaiid said that when the pepie's party bad dissolved he was iu lavor of disbanding the liberal party. "1 made this assertion," said Mr. fc'utli-erlaii- "but three weeks ao, ami so far as 1 am personally concerned 1 feel that i ought to lie true to my word. 1 realize that thU is a question on which men may lightluiiy ditl'er. Still, all that, our pany has claimed from the iirst is that whin the people's party disbanded thu liberal party would willing disband. Now when the young men ol the other side come and lay down their arms, hall we stand on the walls with our guns cocked and say we will not accept your surrender. J for one believe they ure acting in good faith. 1 do tun beiieve wtiat Judge Jones nys is true, that they are dictated to by the tirt presidency of the mormoii church. Itaoems utterly absurd that they could personally negotiate with 30,000 men scattered from one end of the territory to the other; this seems to me to b too utterly absurd and too a swindle to bo believed. Then Jtulg Jones believes that the swindle will be carried even farther than this, he believes the mormons will go to emi-gre aud tell the republicans that they ar republican.--; and the democrats that thev nre democrats after they are ad miited. Doesn't Judxe .lom--s think that in the whole congrese of theL'nitsd States there is not one honest man' I know this kind of talk does not please you, I can see it by the expression ou your faces, but I am a republican and I thought it better to teii you here who hae been my friends, than to go off to some republican meeting and announce myself as such. Gentleman from hence-forth I am a republican." The resolution offered by Dr. Shores Was voted down. A. r. Sutherland de-clined the honor of thu chairmanship "or the second time, and then Newell Knifdits and J. I. Jones declined, finally Henry K. Kawling waselected fhairnian and accepted.
