Show Claggett of Idaho is Allowed the Privilege of the Floor Pending the Settlement Settle-ment of His Claim. THE DIRECT TAX BILL PASSED. It Now Goes to the President for His Signature and will Probably Become a law, Washington, Feb, 18. The motion to reconsider the vote passing a bill establishing national prisons was made and entered. Tho vice-president laid before the senate a communication from the family fam-ily of the late Ceueral Sherman expressing ex-pressing profound gratitude and appreciation appre-ciation of the honor bestowed by the senate upon the memory of their father in its testimonial of coudolenco. The senate special coiuiiiitloe agreed to the house amendment to the direct tax bill. It new goes to tho president. Tho privilege of the floor was given Claggett, claiming to be senator-elect from Idaho, peuding the decision of his claim. Various resolutions heretofore offered of-fered were agreed to, including the following: fol-lowing: Instructing the committee on territories to visit Alaska -during recess aud inquire into its resources and into all matters relating to its welfare; in structing tho committee on privileges privi-leges and elections to inquire and report at what time compensation to senators from newly admitted states ought to begin. The house amendment to the direct tax bill was taken up aud agreed to. The bill now goes to the president. The house bill giving a pension of ?2500 a year to the widow of Admiral Porter was passed. The senate agreed to tho conference reports on the bills to establish United States land court, and to define and regulate the jurisdiction of courts of the United States. The house substitute for the senate tonnage bill was laid on the table for the present. HOUSE. Washington, Feb. 28. A motion to ask the senate for a conference committee com-mittee on the shipping bill as amended by the house last uight was agreed to. Cannon moved to suspend the rules and agree to the motion, the house to non-concur in the senate amendments to the sundry civil appropriation bill and accede to the request of the senate for a conference. The house committee on reform in the civil service today agreed to report the bill to provide for the single civil service commissioner with two deputies in place of tho present triple-headed commission. The committee on foreign affairs re ported back the diplomatic and consular con-sular appropriation bill with the reconi- mendation that all senate amendments be agreed to with thd exception of the amendment providing for the cable between be-tween San Francisco and the Hawaiian islands. The recommendations were concurred in: yeas 225, uays none; the roll being called in order to emphasize the opposition oppo-sition of the house to the Hawaiian cable ca-ble proposition. Caswell (Wisconsin) supported the conference report on the bill to define and regulate the jurisdicion of courts of the I'nited States. It was adopted. The conference report on the bill establishing establish-ing the private land claim of the court was also agreed to. The sundry civil apropriation bills and legislative appropriation appro-priation bills were sent to the conference confer-ence without objection. |
