On Glade mountain, West Virginia, reside the "coincident Franklins," a fanuly which is, in one respect at least the most peculiar of any in the whole country. The Franklins are a family of coincidences. The father and mother were married on the 14th of October. They have had nine children, all of whom were born on the 14th of October. Five of the nine are dead, and, strangetosay every single one of them breathed his last on the fateful 14th day of October The name of the head of the family is Joshua Franklin. He was a Confederate soldier, and was captured twice and had two brothers killed in the war between the states. All four of these mishaps and misfortunes of war occurred on the memorable 14th day of October. In the neighborhood where the Frank-lin family live, and, in fact, for miles outside of their immediate latitude, the "Franklins of Glade mountain" are looked upon with superstitious awe. It is said that not a single human bein who knows of the mystery surrounding the family can be prevailed upon to stay in the house or about the premises on either the day or night of Oct. 14. What do you think of a woman who can run a factory and turn out 1,000 ci-gar boxes a day? Think she is a myth? Well, she is not, but a tall, fair and forty specimen of womanhood who can balance 200 pounds and manage a force of twenty people. Her name is Mrs. Mary Bleffert, her factory is on Attor-ney street, and her husband is the head assistant of her establishment. Not very many years ago this majostio merchant was employed in a box factory with huudreds of other little women. Khe was quick witted, ambitious and restless. A young fellow named Bleff ert hsd charge of her division. Ho admired her skill, love followed admiration and marriage love. There was no wedding tour, no kalsomined pastry, no satin rib-bons and no foolish expenditures. There was a honeymoon, though, and it has not waned, either. There was a toy savings bank, then a bank account, a lot of dreaming and planning and then the Bleffert box factory. It is right that the strong should lead, and that's what Mary Bleffert has been doing for the last five years, and that's why she ia mistress of a prosperous business. New York World. Sl'MMOXS. When that heard in a building panic seizes upon iBniats and indescribable confusion f Some one runs to a fire box and " islii an alarm, which sounds in every . L house in this city. rWsponseonthepartof the firemen their horses is immediate. There is ,e without blundering, there is no in-- jtfenw of one man with another. Eager- -' w be off and resolution to work are icted on each man's face. In ten seo-j- s the drivers are on their seats, lines in jd, waiting the order to go. It is given, j away they dash, the horses needing no one the men clinging with one hand to rail of the cart, wriggling into their rub-,- r coats. Not many minutes later they s on tho ground, the hose is attached to hydrant, ladders are run up and the f tie with the fire begins. The inmates of the burning building, to a few minutes before were panic ricken, regain confidence. Our firemen, l,0i without hesitation, plunge into a ,nling building, are men who at one nc in life wore as liable as any one to ire panic," which influences men to do ,ry foolish and cowardly things. That lCy are not bo now ia duo to the training oy receive and the trials to which they subjected. Let us follow the course bich an applicant for appointment to the t department in this city must undergo fore be can wear the badge, which is the ublcm of "courage and fidelity." TRIAL OF QUALIFICATION. fter being recommended by the fire mimiiisioners for appointment the appli-in- t is examined as. to his physical quali--ation- s. If they are up to the standard Is turned over to the civil service for examination aa to his nowledge of the common school branches, he passes he is sent to headquarters, here he enters the school of instruction the life saving corps, of which the drill iiister is Mr. Henry W. MoAdams. He ashad charge of the school since itsorgan-atio- n in 1SS2. No one can go behind his turns; there is not political pull enough the city to secure the appointment of a un whom be rejects. It is in this school, ud during the thirty days he is in train-is- ;, that the applicant proves his fitness r unfitness to be enrolled in the service. The New York fire department has a implete gymnasium, where, besides the pparatus for the development and lengthening of the muscles, are all the reliances it has in use. Thorough in-action is given to the applicant by Mr. k'Ad,ii9, himself a veteran fireman, as j their purpose and proper handling, amiliarity with these appliances is abso-itcl- y indispensable to celerity on the part fa fireman, whose efeential characteristic mst be quickness. A slow man has no Iiance for appointment in the department. TRAINING PROBATIONERS. Probationers are also taught morality in n indirect yet forcible manner. Kemem- - ring that their calling demands of them rorage and honesty, the probationer who with some company, either in the engine ouse or at a fire, feels that he is associa-iii- g with men who are gentle in their man-er- a, respectful and obedient to superiors,' adyatany instant to hold the muzzle lose against a flame that menaces them rith death, aud who would not disgrace l.eir uniform. If he has the true stuff in im he will soon conform with them in liought, purpose and demeanor, and on very occasion emulate them in zeal and wnor. The cultivation of good manners and thcr qualities that constitute a man is aught in an unobtrusive way. For e, the applicant learns the story of the ire at Chambers street and Broadway, 'cars ago, when the employes of a bank ushed into the street, leaving $100,000 in ash on the counters. Thr firemen ran in, athered the money together, throw it into to safe, and locked the safe door. When he money was taken out and counted only was missiig, and that consisted of silver hilars, which in the excitement had prob-"'l- y rolled away. Hearing such a story he applicant of tho right material is very My to resolve to behave with equal hon-'sty-every fire to which he is called. MEN OF NATURAL COURAGE. "Men are natural cowards where there's '.are," said Capt. McAdams to me. "Put id Barnum's wild animals in that lot over iiere and then drop a child among them, "id in nine cases out of ten the father of hat child will go in after it. But let there an alarm of fire In inthenight us; and that same man will run into the reet and leave his child behind. I have lever seen a man suffocated at a fire with i child in his arms, but I have seen women ring dead from suffocation with a child in inch arm. The man's first thought is to fet into the street when he'hears the house on fire. The woman's first thought is her children." . The probationers are, no doubt, naturally tiurageous, and each one resolves to be as heroic as any man who has won the Ben-W-t medal; but when there is a fire and ";ey "go in" with the firemen their true aetal is shown. Tho captain's eye is on 'Mm. If they waver he sees it, but if they 'osolutely hold their faces to the fire and r,'ey orders, no matter if the smoke is thick wough to be cut and if their teeth are chatt-ering loud enough to be heard above the crackling of the flames, he knows that they "e of the right stuff and reports favorably ipon them. If an applicant cannot stand !' smoke, which, Capt. McAdams says, eels in your throat as if some fellow were jTing to force you to swallow a baseball," is is dropped from the list. Epoch.
