That every statement not authoritative-ly announced should be read with a grain of allowance. That two grains wouldn't be amiss in most tales. w. L Harris. Zimmerman, the Jersey Flyer. Arthur A. Zimmerman, the famous bi-cyclist of the New Jersey Athletic club, who recently lowered Willie Windle'a colors in two important races at Peoria, Ills., was born at Camden, N. J., in 1SCD, and was educated at the Freehold institute, at Freehold, N. J. He is about 6 feet in height, slenderly but powerfully built, and has made his mark as a plucky and hardy THE NATIONAL GAMK. S f .... Jlr,"W. I. Harm Sizes up the Baseball " Situation in a Terse Yet Conn prehensive Manner,,',. WHAT WILL HAPPEN 00T0BEE 5? Tiara ara Many Humors, No One of whioh May be True, and Some of which are Positively Absurd. A STew Yorker who la undoubtedly In the confidence of the Brotherhood recently asserted that the Players' league would throw a bomb on the 5th day of October that will send a cold chill down the back-bone of the old League and fill Its follow AETHtJR A. ZIMMERMAN, rider in many a dash. His work at Peoria tvas somewhat of a surprise, when he de-feated Windle by about two feet in the quarter mile dash, time 86 seconds, and in the ten mile American championship, time 82m. 1 He also won the one mile ordinary handicap in 3m. 83 s. at Syracuse, N. Y. Zimmerman recently brought the time for a half mile down to lin. 13a., which now stands as the amateur record. Zimmerman's father is an enthusiast on bicycling, ami accompanies his talented son on nearly all of his important engage-ments. Outfielder John McOencliy. A brilliant outfielder and a talented all round ball player is John C. McGeachy, of the Brooklyn (P. L.) team. He is 5 ft. 8 in. high, weighs 103 pounds and was born at Clinton, Mass., about twenty-si- x years ago. He first appeared professionally in 1888 with the Waterbury (Conn.) team, and remained with them during 1884. In 18S5 he played with both the Long Island, East- - era wltn dismay. Since the statement was made newspaper men all over the country have been making a still hunt after the in-side Itrail of that deadly bomb. None ot us has found it yet that is, not a trail that one can awear by. I met a Brother-hood man recently who gave me, as ha claimed, the secret of the bomb. His story is that it is an agreement between the pro-prietors of the Louisville club and the Players' League, by the terms of which the Louisville club, if it wins the American as-sociation championship, will desert that organization and play the champions of the Players' league for the championship of the world, aud after, the games have been played the Louisvilles are to be ad-mitted to the Players' league circuit in place of the Buffalo club, i Another story that comes to me is that the deal between Von Der Ahe and Phelps, thatf was a part of the business of that Philadelphia conference, has really been ' completed, and that the denials of it ha.ve only been made to keep certain- - people, as well as the public, deiuded until the scheme isripo. ' - k '.. . h The next yarn is that the" players of the Brooklyn League club will, if they win the pennant, get together as individuals and play the Brotherhood champions. But the wildest of all tho rumors is the story telegraphed east by a Chicago man that Aaron Stern has decided to sell out the Cincinnati club, and has placed a prioe on it said to be 840,000, and that Secretary Bruncll, of the Brotherhood, has been given an option on the club, and that ho is at present engaged, in company with Al Johnson, in raising the money. When Johnson and Brunei! have bought the club they propose to make it a Brotherhood organization, and Cincinnati is to receive a franchise in the Players' league. Of all these stories, and many mora which I might retail, the first one seems to be the only tale of the lot which is at all likely to be true. The methods of Presi-dent Parsons, of the Louisville club, in 1889, and the frequent conferences of Zach Phelps, president of the American associa-tion, with the men who are openly known as the emergency committee of the Broth-erhood, lay both those gentlemen under suspicion, and there would be very little ' surprise if tho announcement was made that Phelps and Parsons had made a bar-gain with the euemies of the National league and of the national agreement. It 1 would be difficult to estimate what the ef-fect of such a scheme would be upon the fortunes of the National league. It seems ' to me if the men who are alleged to have ' made it are able to carry it out a matter "at considerable doubt that the effect would not. be very injurious to tbe N-ational league. It would saddle another .twenty-fiv- e cent town and another advo-iisat9o- Sunday baseball oa to the Players' league, and I believe that this would coun-terbalance whatever might be gained by the- playing of a series for the world's championship, which this year is not likely to be over profitable. The events of the last week have given us some clew as to the probable National league circuit for 189L The failure of the once great Athletic club, a splendid organ-ization holding a valuable franchise, which, by the way, has been ruined by the most feeble and incompetent management with which a club was ever afflicted, and the ac-quisition of Robinson, McMahon and Welch by the Baltimore club, are indica-tions that Manager Barnie's city will be in the National league next year. One is led to this conclusion from the nature of the salaries which are said to be inserted in the contracts of these three men, an ag-gregate of something like $11,000 for the lot. Surely on the present outlook for next sea-son no American association club could af-ford to shoulder such responsibilities. It has been hinted that Barnie has been strengthening his team so as to be in readi-ness to join the Players' league, but such an act would be so inconsistent with his repeated assertions to me, and to almost every newspaper man in the country, that to believe it one must believe Barnie to be both a hypocrite and a liar. We are told every few days that Pitts-burg will surely have a National league team next season. But who believes it? The old league magnates are not foolish, and it strikes me that those who do not think that Pittsburg, is to be dropped must consider them so. There is only one chance for Pittsburg, and that is the abandonment of her territory by the Players' club, which is a very unlikely thing at this stage of the JOHN a ll'CEACUT. era league and Detroit (N. L.) clubs. Ho joined tbe St. Louis (N. L.) team in 18SD and was transferred to the Indianapolis (N. Li.) club in 1887, with which he did good work for three seasons. When the great baseball war commenced McGeachy went over to the Brotherhood, and Capt. Ward, of the Brooklyn team, has found in him a valuable and trust-worthy player. One of McGcachy's most notable performances was In 1889 in a game between Chicugo and Indianapolis, when he made a safe hit each of the five times he grasped the stick, three of which were singles, one a double bagger and the fifth a home run. Lieut. Mulr I Champion. Lieut. Charles H. Muir, who recently won first prize as a rifleman attheuational marksmen's tourney. Camp Douglas, Wis., is a member of the Seventeenth 1 n fantry.U. S. A. He was born at Erie, Monroe county, Mich., in July, 1800, entered West Point in 1880, and was graduated in 1883. Ho stood eighth in a class of over forty mem-bers, and was as-signed tO the Sev-enteenth infantrv LiEtrr. chas. H. MUin. at Devil's Lake, N. D., where he first showed his extraor-dinary talent with the rifle. Muir has won numerous notable contests, and In the recent competition at Camp Douglas led his company, was third in his depart-ment, and won the first medal in his di-vision. It is said that his work undoubt-edly places him at the head of American riflemen and among the first marksmen In the world. game. I am told that If Baltimore is taken into tlie National league the twenty-fiv- e cent tariff will be continued there. Joe Pritehard, of St. Louis, recently made the broad statement that John B. Day believed that Sunday baseball would make the New York club a winner, and that he was favorably considering such a scheme. There isn't a word of fact in that statement. Mr. Day is irrevocably opposed to Sunday baseball, and would, I believe, retire from the sport altogether rather than runaclub in a league in which Sunday games were played. THINGS THAT ARE SAID. That the premature publication of the Comiskey deal has spoiled it That all Boston is up in arms at the ru-mor that "King" Kelly Is to be stolon way from them by the festive Johnson, j That Eddie Talcott blames the loss of the Players' pennant by the New York club to Eddie Crane, and intimates that Eddie C. will not be a member of the team next year. That if Eddie isn't signed somebody will have to put up for the $1,000 which Eddia contributed to the capital of the New Yorks (limitod). That Ed Crane was no more responsible for thk ill luck of the Giants than several ether men who might be mentioned. That an anxious public is watching the Pittsburg misfits as they near the Louis-ville standard. You can almost count them HI; will they beat it 111? That Palmjr O'Neill now concedes that they will. - That Billy Barnie was in big luck to bo "representative of the Association" dur-ing tho settlement of the Athletio elnb troubles. That he represented Baltimore wben h cooped in Robinson, Welch and McMahon. That William always looks out for num-ber one, and that he only did what any other Association manager would have dene under like circumstances. That the National league is signing its one) year men right and left. That all talk about Charley Ganzel go-ing to the Boston (Players' league) team is nonsense. Gaapel is not an ingrate. That Long John Keilly waa "talking through his hat" when he said that he saw' I Charley Radbourn practice two hours and then go out on the field the same day and Hitch a tame against Chicago. . .
