SUGGESTS A FOLIOT OF IGOHOMY, Which is Promptly Adopted, Bat Hot in the Spirit of Fairness He Desired. Since this morning Maria and I do not speak as we pass by. The trouble has a financial origin and dates from the night previous. I was Bitting in my study perusing The Times when my wife dropped in and took pos-session of a chair opposite. As a rule she does not seek my company but rather avoids it when she can and I was therefore somewhat alarmed at her ap-pearance; but with the calm courage characteristic of me 1 lay down the pa-per and remarked placidly: "What can I do for you, my dear?" ' Maria glared at me for a moment as if to divine the degree of sincerity in my address, and then she rejoined in a cool and irritating way: "You can't do anything for me, Mr. Fresh. A husband that needs to be re-minded of his duty towards his wife is no good on earth, and that is your size, ir: but the Door little children will bear potent soothing syrup, but it was, alas, too late. The baby wonldn't hush. I hummed, I w histled and I caroled my best, but it was no use. It was wasting my breath upon the desert air. Then! swore, and still the enfante terrible kept up its shrill soprano. Directly Maria popped her head through the door and inquired what all the fuss was about anyway. She de-manded to know if, I. was too big a fool to take care of my own child when economy called for the dismissal of the nurse; and before retiring she suggest-ed that I act less sleepy and trot the darling a little more. I trotted the darling, but only a minute, then I lay it down heedless of its crying, and struck a violent attitude. In my per-ambulations through the room my big toe had collided with the hard stove and the result was painful. I shot into the air about three feet and on landing hugged the injured member to my breast. Then I hopped about on one leg emphasizing the feat with extracts from profane history until my wife ar-rived on the scene. ."Mr. Fresh," she remarked, "this is an unseemly hour for a man of your age to act the clown and scare the whole neighborhood out of its senses, while leaving the baby, poor thing, to catch her death. It would be hard to find a more inhuroau father in Salt Lake and it is a wonder I have put up with you so long, you wretch;" and picking up the baby with a dramatic gesture she continued: "But I shall settle with you some day, Mr. Fresh." At this she took her exit and I retired also, heavy hearted. In the morning Maria did not come to breakfast but sent me word she was nervous and .wanted the doctor. She didn't want me if she died. I presume the doctor will be coming every day until I raise the sixty dollars and restore the nurse. Oh, me! neglect no longer. Winter is ooming on and they need wraps and flannels and hoods and hose and mits and shoes " "flow much cash will it require to supply their wants?" I cried in loud alarm. "By hard pinching and mending so they may look half decent, Jerry, I may fit them out on sixty dollars," sighed my wife with mingled resigna-tion and affection. ' ' Sixty dollars! Ghost of Julius Caesar, that is just the size of my month's sal-ary. I could scarcely trust my senses so overwhelming was the demand. I rose from the chair and paced the floor of my study for several minutes. Large and copious 'beads of perspiration cov-ered my forehead and a feverish flush mantled my manly cheeks. Sixty dol-lars! Did Maria take me for a Vander-bil- t or a protected industry? She evi-dently discerned my emotions for directly she remarked: "When a man has a family like you he must expect to take care of it. Do you want to let the children go in rags, and stay out of school and be laughed at by everybody? You are inhuman enough for anything, Mr. Fresh, but while I live the poor things shall be looked after, that is my policy," and as she concluded I noticed a tear glisten-ing in her cold grey eyes. 'My dear," I said pacifically, "times are pretty hard; can we not economize in some way to make both ends meet? Suppose we discharge the nurse girl to begin with. The baby is growing" Maria never gave me a chance to fin-ish. With a majestic sweep she passed out of my study murmuring the words, "we shall economize." In vain did I try to resume The Times. An omin-ous cloud rested over my future and op-pressed my soul. Oh, for a congenial heart and a dear friend who would ad-vance me sixty dollars and ask no questions. : When I returned from work the fol-lowing evening Maria was out calling. My study was cheerless as my pros-pects. I hailed my heir apparent and asked him what was the matter with the fire. "Mamma says we must econo-mize," was his reply. At supper there was no coffee. Now I dote on coffee. Maria doesn't. She likes tea, and she had it. "My dear," I asked timidly, "is there no coffee in the house?" " There was mingled dignity and scorn in her voice as she rejoined there wasn't. "Coffee is too expensive a lux-ury," she added, "and we must econo-mize." I was crushed. When supper was over I betook myself to the nearest saloon to revive my spirits. I needed it, for worse things were still in store for me. On my return homo my wife informed me that she had discharged the nurse at my suggestion, and that hereafter I would be required to take charge of the baby nights. , The blow nearly stunned nie. I had an important appointment with Swill at Op. m., from which I expected great fun. Swill was very fond of cribbage, and he thought he could play it, but he couldn't. We always- - played for the cigars, and he was an easy victim, be-sides which he kept a popular brand of liquor in the house with which to keep up the animation of the game. It was that animation I disliked to give up, but brave as I am, I had not the cour-age to meet Maria in her present mood and ask her to excuse me. Of course I might have gone without her permis-sion, as becomes a lord of creation, but I didn't feel safe. By the way, I would like to get a personal introduction to the fellow who called man the lord of creation and strangle bim. He is a liar. With a heart bowed down with grief and woe I retired early. So did the baby; but whether my company was not congenial to her, or whether she was not acclimated to me, she soon be-gan to whimper. I soothed her vain alarm, but to no purpose," I called her Mopsy, and Angel, and Love, but she didn't mind it; she just screamed. Then I patted her curly head and sang a sweet lullaby, but she wouldn't let me, and yelled. I was at my wits' ends, and so I called Maria to my assistance. She said the child was teething, and I should give her a dose of soothing syrup and then walk with her until she went to sleep. I felt like giving her a dose of paregoric, but I didn't say so, and within thirty minutes thereafter the Infant was in the arms of Morpheus, and so was I. It might have been somewhere near midnight when my slumbers were rudely interrupted by the squalling of . the baby. I didn't want to get up, for it was cold in the room, so I exhausted all my strategy to molify the squaller and patch up a truce with her for the balance of the night, but her ire seemed to be aroused to an undue pitch. I thought she was for all the world like ker mother. Finally I resorted to-- he Take Notice."'
