This is Iho race w hich will take place betw een j the Minerva and the Litis under the : auspicies of the Larchniont Yacht club. The interest which centers THR HINKRVA. around this match is due to the fact that the Minerva, though now owned in America, Amer-ica, is an English built boat, while the 1, iris is a good type of the American keel sloop. The date of tho races has not yet lieen settled, but it is understood that they will take place betwaen the lirchmont annual an-nual races in July and tho cruise of tho Xew York Yacht, club, which begins early in August. The courses of the match nre to lie, for tho first race, ten miles to windward wind-ward or leeward and return. The second race will lie over the thirty mile course of the Larc.hmont Yacht club, and the third, if one is necessary, will be over the same course as the second. Tho prize is to be a cash one of large, amount, and the club will add a purso or prize to the private one. The cutter Minerva was launched in tho fall of 1888, and crossed the Atlantic soon after, on her own bottom, under command of tfcpt, Charlie Earr, a brother of the famous fa-mous skipper of the Thistle. Her length over all is 54 feet, on the water line 38 feet 11 inches, beam 10 feet 6 inches, draughtO feet and present anil area 9,750 square feet. She was recently purchased by John Iee Carroll, Jr., from Admiral Charles Tweed, ot the Corinthian -Yacut club. . In tho races which were sailed last yeat s.tainst the Minerva she walked away tromall competitors with the single exception ex-ception of the Liris, which beat her by six minutes in the Oyster bay regatta. The TIIK l.IHIS. f.iris was designed by a young naval architect, archi-tect, was launched last spring and sailed her maiden race in the regatta of tbe New York Yacht club. Her lengt h over all is 57 feet, on tho water line 39 feet 11 inches, breadth of leant IS feet 8 inches, draught 9 feet and sail area 3,300 square feet, which is 300 feet less than she had last year. According Ac-cording to the Seawanhaka rule of time allowance, the Liris will allow the Minerva two minutes and forty seconds for a thirty ciilo course. |
