Show A STRANGE CASE. Sufferings of a Poor Widow Make Her In-aae. In-aae. Newbukg, NY.. July 21. The so-ciety so-ciety for the prevention of cruelty to children has found a strange case here. Mrs. Eliza Stecker, who lives at No. 4. Chamhers street, is a widow who has seen trouble. Twenty-five years ago she came to America. One child was struck with a stone and died of lockjaw. lock-jaw. Another, a boy, lost part of his hand celebrating the Fourth of July, and her husband was killed while working work-ing at the powder mill here. In consequence the woman has become be-come demented, and today the fact is brought out that she has a 9-year-oid girl who nas been imprisoned in the house for six years. She has never been to school, and has not during the six years been permitted even to speak to other children out of the windows of the little house in the Second ward. Mrs. Stockier says her troubles came because she is bewitched and it is because be-cause other children think her little Anna is bewitched also that she does not give her her freedom. The child has not been out of the house in all that time except at nightfall when she was taken out in the yard, and when she was sick nothing nas been given her. Mrs. Strccklcr herself is a very sick woman, and ,hen asked why she did not call a doctor, said it would cost too much money. The child has been taken to the home for the friendless and the mother to the almshouse. |
