Show YOUTHFUL OUTLAWS' The Police Are on the Alert For Some Had Hoys. The police are lorlay working upon a lead which promises to result in the breaking up of a gang of youthful outlaws out-laws who. according to the story of "Harry" Sheldon, who is ono of their number, are of the very worst character. charac-ter. Sheldon did not voluntarily visit the police station and give out this information. infor-mation. Ho went in the custody of Marshal Young, and his arrest was the result of a forgery which will land him either in the reform school or the penitentiary. peni-tentiary. The young man wrote the name of J. II. Clark to a number of checks, some of which were cashed, while othors were not. One which was not cashed was the cause of his arrest this morning. D The boy, who is but 17 years 01 age, has worked about Clark's grocery store In Market house square on -'rush" days and gained not only the acquaintance but tho conlidence of the proprietor. He also gained a check book from some source and began a session of penmanship. pen-manship. Tho result was that on Saturday Sat-urday he went to the Deseret bank and presented a check for $50, thinking Mr. Clark's wealth was stored there, but the grocer had changed banks and the check was dishonored. Learning that he was banking at the Bank of the Republic, Re-public, Sheldon procured blank checks on that bank and later ho succeeded in getting $28 from the institution on paper supposed to be Clark'. Emboldened by this success he waited over Sunday and appeared early this morning at the bauk with a check for HHfiU. The forgery of Clark's name was almost perfect but the fact of so large a check being in the hands of a boy caused the teller to institute inquiries in-quiries by telephone. While thus employed em-ployed Sheldon quietly hurried out. Clark reported that he had made no such check and hastened to tho bank. The boy was described and in company with Marshal Young Clark set out to find him. About noon Sheldon was found in the vicinity of his home in an alley near Third South street and was arrested. At the station he acknowledged his guilt but this was hardly necessary as he was fully identiliod by the bank people. peo-ple. He says be was not alone in the affair and that several young men with whom he has been associated are the prime movers in the enterprise. The police are at work in a roundup of these. Other crooked work is attributed attrib-uted to them and a wholesale overturning overturn-ing is expected. Sheldon is the son of Professor Sheldon, Shel-don, a dancing master, and has been heretofore respected by all who knew him. |
