The Comte de Paris reached New York today to-day from England and was given an ovation by his old comrades of the army of the Potomac many of whom accompanied by General Daniel Butter-lield Butter-lield went down the bay to meet him. Saturday night the distinguished visitor Will be entertained at a dinner given to him by such of his old army friends as still survive. Tho arrival of the count and his suite was hailed with pleasure bv the survivors, of the old army of the Potomac of the palmy davs of McClellan. To those comrades iie was known simply as Louis Philippe d'Orleans, "captain and nid-de camp to tho major-general commanding." Under this modest title tho princely representative of King Louis xvi., the friend and ally of America, in the dark hours of her birth, served the nation well, in the second great crisis of its historv. He and his brother the due doChiirtres, Captain Robert d'Orleans, U. S. army, as well as their wise and courtly uncle, the Prince de Joinville, at once distinguished themselves by their gallant and willing service and by their gentle and courteous demeanor, endeared themselves forever to tho hearts of their comrades. |
