This si.btlo and mysterious system by which nieiini et tuein are supplied with wardrobes and jewelry at "half their value" was thoroughly voQtilutod in an action of Maurice Sohloss vs. Androw J, Hurt, sheriff. Tho contest Is one of a pccnllarly racy complexion. In his olllclul capacity the sheriff proceeded to levy on the bleaohod-oti- t coutonts of an miction j oint that was being conducted by de-fendant on Main street, near the Co-op- , Tho invoice showed a stock valued at some $'.'800, the plalutiffs In the action being Baum, Fishor & Co, of Milwau-kee, whllo the co respondent was the grandmother of the enterprising Schloss, the venerable patroness be-traying a wonderful predilection for as-signments. As is alleged, the old lady cond ucted an establishment known as the Chicago Clothing store at Unite. This she secured by assignment from the sire of the aggressive Maiirioe, the latter coming to Zion to knock down articles at half their value to Its unwary denizens. It was Introduced In evi-dence that in the meantime the grand-ma ordered a bill of goods of the value of $3500 of Baum, Fisher Co. of Mil-waukee, whereupon another assign-ment issued and tho stock went to her son, Goods of the value of $0000 were then sent to the Salt Lake limb of the alleged combination, and the Milwaukee firm proceodod against them by attachment. When the cose came to trial this morning the attorney were on ,the alert. Maurice was put in the wltnets chair and recited his story with charm-ing dinlectial impresslveness. "You ran an auction store?" chimed counsel for the defense. "Yes, sir," said tho witness. "And sold thing below cost, did you not?" "Not that I am aware of." "Did you not have that seductive legend on your shop door?" "Yes, sir." "And you wore then deceiving the public?" "No. sir; that was simply put up to draw the crowd." "Did you not sell certain articles "There would be no money in that." "Did you not sell a pair of blankets that cost you f t tor $2?" "No, sir; the mark on them was sim-ply to make the buyer believe be was getting the best of it." "Then you did try the humbug act?" "That's not in this esse." "That reminds mo of when I was busted," remarked a spi'dutor, "and didn't have money enough for shave. That's three I owe yon. said 1 to the strange harder, as he lot tne out of tho chair. He thought he was getting two the best of it and noverssid a word." Tho examination afforded awlth of such episodes, and not a man who was present at the first dims left his seat until both sides bad rested . The Matter Rattled. In the action of C, M. Jackson against T. A. Davis, president and manager of The Times, the matter has been amic-ably settled, and is no longer on the record. The affair wss the outgrowth of a personal misunderstanding that, having been unraveled, was easily ad-justed, and hostilities have been de-clared off. LOCAL LIBERAL LACONICS. The Liberal missionaries have goue forth in the cause of American civiliza-tion. Diiriug their absence the home ?uard wiil continue to work for the of the people of Utah, who desire to elect Judge Goodwin to congress. Chairman Executive ComiuitteeF. II. Dyer is doing his prettiest to make this campaign a blessing to romiug genera-tions. . He is ably assisted by a number of worthy lieutenants who are unsultish in their devotion to tho grand cause. The Goodwin pilgrims number liftv-fou- r good and true mon. Their train is composed of a Pullman buffet, Pull-man sleeper and day coach. All in all the party is a jolly one and Salt Lake may well be proud of the outtit. The martial band consists of three lifers, two snare and one bass drummer and a color bearer. The people's party pointer, John T. Caine, is endangering his prospects by bis reticence. Does ho know that his fences around Zion are being demol-ished by the stalwart judge? Tho eiti gens are in earnest about the matter, and propose to bo heard November 4th. This is not a persimmon-knockin- campaign. It's a right for pure civilization in a country that longs to become a state and have a voice that will command respect in the national council, " There are few, if any, axes to grind In this campaign. The end desired is for the public good. Therefore work with all commanding strength for the harvest is near. Judge (ioodwin can hold down a chair in congress better than any man in Utah. Tourists coming in Salt Lake inquire what tho excitement is about. They are informed, and somo conclude to stay on deck until the returns are in and the winner is announced. The discount on rerolations in Salt Lake will be tgreateihan ever aftor the election. As masters now stand, this feature of ancient affairs in Zion is fast being consigned to oblivion, and nobody is any the less Wiser for if a. Shall we have American Institutions In Utah? Can American liberties thrive here when the atmosphere has been purified? Wilt the population of tho territory increase rapidly if Liberalism prevails? These questions are replied to with a big YES. ""' ' a V v The Liberal drum corps makes music that has the ring of freedom and purity. After election the tune of "Girl I loft behind" will be changed to the "Cain that is no good." Tho words will be set to a solemn march. S .: e No local political body ever had abler representatives than the pilgrims on the campaign train which left Salt Lake this morning. The mon accompanying the popular candidate, C. C. Goodwin, possess a thorough knowledgo of the condition of affairs throughout Utah. The people of the territory will warmly welcome the contingent and assist In all ways possible to bring about the measure so earnestly desired by those who are praying for that condition of civilization which commands the re-spect of their fellowmen. - That was a dandy meeting the Lib-erals held In Electric Light hall Satur-day evening. Mayor G. M. Scott pre-sided and in his brief remarks made be-fore introducing the first speaker he told the whole cause of this campaign in these words: "We want a man who will work for the welfare of Utah, not for aoy church," Rattling speeches were made by C. E. Stanton, C. K. Al-len. Judge Wanipler, Judge Powers and Judge Goodwin. There was a great audience present and the event scores another success for the Liberals. LIES ABODTSALT LAKE. The Beal Estate Exchange Justly Desires a Halt on Floating False-hoods. 1 DEBTEE EEALTT FOB SALT LAKE. Some of the Members Are on the Goodwin Pilgrimage' But the Business Bucks Obstaoles, The exchange was up in emphatio words this morning against the penny-liner- s who are writing untruths about Salt Lake and Utah. The time is that this city is eclipsing all cities west of Missouri, and the realty men of towns that are jealous of our wonderful ad-vancement are having these dead-bea- t lies printed about us. Just now some exchange members are in receipt of letters from Denver property owners who desire to swap Denver realty for Salt Lake property, Surely these indications are most favor-able and show whioh way the wind blows. The air is today full of great big deals that would make the head of an Ogden realty man swim. Within the next few days hundreds of thousands of dollars will have changed hands, and Salt Lake's reputation for gigantic transac-tions will spread still further across the continent. Several members of the exchange are off on the Goodwin pilgrimage and for lew days they will devote their ability to the advancement of Am eiican civili-sation and institutions within Utah. . This once firmly established there will be no trouble about the future of the country. There were no wants or offers this morning, but the market is as firm as a rock and .investors iaod callers are Keep your eye on the exchange. Money for Salt Lake. E. M. He has been visiting Da-vis & stringer and the company he rep: resents expects to place $500,000 if op-- ' portunity offers. Mr. de Shields is pleased with the outlook. A Slat Mine. John Harris has just discovered large deposits of pure slate rock west of Kephi. It is a six foot vein and is en-tirely free from foreign substances. It is to all appearances the same quality M that of which school slates are made, snd when sharpened can be used as a Hate pencil. While not too soft, it is toft enough tj write without scratching he slate a particle. Such a mine, lo-cated as it is within three or four miles pf tho Union Pacific railroad, should be developing, if for no other pur-pose than to supply roofing material. Mineral In Juab. Speaking of tho mineral wealth of JTuab county, the Nephi Ensign says: We have large mines of genuine1 min-eral paint, lying almost at our .very doors, while we are importing fire-proof iron paint of an inferior quality. If further proof of the above assertion Is required we might' mention our lime stone quarries Uian whioh no better lime can be found on earth, and still our masons have to quit work on ac-count of scarcity of that article. Chamber of Commerce. A gentleman in Canada wants to lo-cate here. .. " . !. ; i . Eastern parties ask for information about establishing a bluing, shoe and stove blacking manufactory in this city. '. A TEMPEBJB OE MEETING ADDBEiS. Wildman Murphy of the Y. M. 0. A. Speaks on Temperance in the First Baptist Church. Rev. Mr, Mabry of the Methodist Episcopal church spoke of the five loaves and five fishes. The great spir-itual truth beneath 'this ruiraclo is that the multitude is to be fed with the bread of life.' The disciples broke the bread and gave it to the people and the bread of life is for the sons and daugh-ters of men. There is a desire in the better thoughts and feelings of men for this bread of life. Christ's compassion for us is great, and we should labor more earnestly to have the soul that hungers come to Him. We must be more earnest, strengthen our faith, and labor more for God. When the church works hungry souls will be fed. W. C. T. V. Meeting. A gospel temperance meeting was held last evening under the auspices of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union in the First Baptist church Miss Turner, president of the union, who presided, made somo practioal remarks to the young men prior to introducing Mr. Murphy. The subject was divided into three heads by Mr. Murphy: Why do men drink at all? Why do they drink when they don't want to? Why don't they know when they have drank all they are able to carry? The custom of social drinking and treating is one of the main causes of such widespread intemperance today. To hope to wipe out drunkenness by legal prohibition is useless. Mr. Murphy considered the acceptance of the teachings of Christ the only sure remedy. Mr. Greer com-plimented the work of the Women's Christian Temperance union and the Young Men's Christian association. St, Mary's CstUedrat. Rev. Father Hipkay's subject was about rendering unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things which are God's. The worker h as a right to the labors of his hands which must be protected and recog-nized. 'There are two agencies in the world which are antagonistic: Caesar and God. The former embraces all contained In the term Caesarism and the latter Is that divine institution the church. The great, question is, which shall rule, God or Mammon? Christ acknowledged the obligation to Ca-sa- r but did not loose sight of the duty to God. The agencies employed by the world to conflict with tho church are power, prejudice and sophistry. Christ is master of all and the church is his kingdom. First Preibyterian, Rev. Dr. McNiece preached a sermon on temperance in the morning. The theme of his avening discourse was the, conversion of Saul of Tarsus. This man was ready to lead the disciples of Christ to persecution. The conversion of Saul, was a radical change of the heart and a wonderful oue( too. Many of the eminent men of the world are believers in Christ and champions of Christianity. A man who is truly con-verted and blessed becomes a bless-ing to the worid. - Central Christian. . Eider B. F. Clay spoke on the aims and purposes of the disciples of Christ in the Nineteenth century. The causo of divison in the churches was the hu-man creeds they adopted. To bring alo tt a union of the churches the load-ers tried to restore tie teaching and practice of the Apostolic church. The cardinal principle is faith in unity and in opinion liberty. In our endeavor to convert the world to thirst we are mis-sionaries. ' St. Mark's Cathedral. Rev.Mr.Morris spoke of the cleansing of the leper. The leper had unbounded faith in Christ. The disease was ter-rible, but Christ allowed the man to approach and touch him. Leprosy represents a physical disease, and also a degradation of the soul. To be made clean we must be like the leper and ask forgiveness., Swedish Lutheran, Rev. Mr. Doerr preached on "I shall be satisfied." Whenever man looks on nature he sees a difference. For all who love to labor for the lord their is a sweet rest. The custom of coldness in churches and a generous feeling estab-lished among the members. The Chris-tian has has the pearl of justification. First CenrregatloaaL Rev. J. B. Thrall's topic was "The in-ward man is renewed day by day." God is the only person who can effectively help us through with our troubles. The laws of growth depend npon God for existence. To be always young we must wait npon the Lord that he may daily renew our strength. ItarfSlaa. Choice building lots on Drigbam street. Choice building lots on East Bench.
