LRE WORKINC AWAY LIKE LITTLt MEN. afMmiW cjniilnlliif the Work Thry Ilava in Hand-- A llcllnf That th Competition for the CI --County MulldlDg Will be Open to All. One of the most successful archi-tects in Suit Lnke chatted with a Times reporter latt evening. "The city county building affair has brought the achitects into greater prominence these days. They are in good shape to effect organization, and the body will be a big benefit to all concerned. All of the architects are engaged on the work they have had in hand for some time. From no un-til about February 1, 1891, new work will be scarce, although a few jobs may drop. The business was in this condi-tion last winter, and it will repeat it-self this season. All of the architects report having plenty of work for next spring, and tho prospects for the ap-proaching year are flattering. "The closing year has been very good for the planners of buildings in Salt Lake. The majority of busiuess blocks erected are for speculative purposes and but few really handsome residences were built. After tho speculative fever has in a degree subsided then tine resi-dences will be erected. This was the case in Denver and Omaha and it seems so in all energetic western towns. The dwellings built the past season were in the majority of a cheap order, not a few of them constructed from plans furnished by carpenters. There is something I wish to mention particu-larly. At the meeting of the ar-chitects the other day they re-ferred to carpenters and "builders who furnish plans for houses and thus de-prive regular architects of their right-ful business. Some of the members at the meeting favored excluding from their list the carpenters and builders who thus infringe upon their rights. mVpi T do Itnlierft thft hniltlintr onm- - mittee of the city-count- y building will throw open the competition for the structure to all the architects ia the city. Uy so doing they will have an opportunity to compare the plans of some lifteen or twenty architects and as each man has different ideas as to what such a building should bo the dis-- ' jlay of designs will lie interesting. The idea of giving the job to one man is wrong and the committee would be doing themselves an in justice. The ac-tual cost of complete plans for a building to cost about :)0n.(X)O would be about $3,500. Then a superintendent would have to bo paid something like $1,500 and the architect if he took a true inter-est in the structure would also have to be at, the building very often. 'To me it is a'woniler that V. K. Ware did not jump on Apponvi yester-- day and furnish material for a first-clas- s scrap item for the newspapers. The latter went in Mr. Ware's office and talked like a trooper until he was or-dered out of the room by the owner. Ware pluckily replied that he could prove all he had ever said about Ap-ponvi. Young Ware is as active as a wild cat and he is not given to mis-statements."
