Show stnito to him that the November election elec-tion was a political freak not uncommon uncom-mon to off years and that the tariff had but little effect in producing it. What inlliience it had for the bad was due solely to a concei ted scare raised by tha democrats before the provisions of the bill juu then passed could be tested. If Mr. Cleveland believes free trade has suddenly seized the American heart we advise him to run on that platform in 1802. It is our opinion, based upon the most convincing proof, that protection was never more a cardinal principle of the American faith thuu It is today. The fact alone that Mr. Cleveland will not bo able to secure a single delegate to the national convention troni his own state shows that the prophet of "tariff reform" Is not honored in his own home. He is indeed a smiled prophet. At the banquet of the Tariff Reform club last night ex President Cleveland exulted over the late election as a tariff I victory and with fat-witted effusion he contrasted the opinions of certain republicans re-publicans upon the McKiulcy bill with their subsequent defeat. With (ar better logic the stuffed prophet of William Wil-liam street might have cited his own case in evidence of the popular sentiment senti-ment with regard to free trade.
