Two young men wore waiting on Miss Maggie Dunwn, a pretty 10-year-ohJ orphan girl, who lived with her grandmother, grand-mother, Mrs. Smith, three miles southeast south-east of Greenfield. The girl favored Mr. Asa McKinley, while her uncles and aunts favored the suit of Mr. John Curry. Miss Duncan and her choice had made arrangements to be married, but the fact becoming known, plans were laid tofrus-trate tofrus-trate their intentions. Miss Duncan was invited to tho houss of her aunt, Mrs. Joshua Barrel t, and soon afterward another uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Archey, with their favored suitor, John Curry, made theii appearance. The company then under took to persuade Misis Maggie to marrj Curry. Believing that their pleas woulc lie successful, they hail obtained tbeser vices of the Rev. D. A. Evans, df the 51. K. church of this city, who came prepared pre-pared to tie the knot. Young McKinley appeared on the scene at this time and pleaded earnestly earn-estly with the girl to stand by him. He had a paper, which he wished her to sign, swearing eternal fealty to him, but, while po promising, nhe was unable to sign the paper liecause young Curry threw a buggy robe around her and held her arms down. McKinley, relying on her faithfulness, left, and the work on the faithful girl began. The preacher, in the meanwhile, retired, but, unable to withstand the persuasion of so many, Miss Duncan, at 3 o'clock in the morning, morn-ing, finally consented to wed Curry. The license was soon obtained from the county clerk, who was aroused from his peaceful si umbers, and at the breaking of the day Mugg'" Duncan became Mrs. John Curry, Indianapolis Journal. |
