Show DAY UNTO DAY By N R L On March the thirteenth I caught ht the first glimpse of the harris sparrow this year Flocks of them were in the hed hedge e brush and plum thickets alon along the roadside There Thero is is no bird note with a more clear and rich tone than that of the Harris sparrow Their sweet sloW cs nole range e up and down clown the scale as they sing in chorus in quartets and trios and ducts duets all ail in Ira eXquisite ex exquisite harmony The result being being- as near like the notes of a softly plucked h harp rp as can be imagined I They are somewhat shorter than are cardinal and have short thick beaks as all s seeding ding eat eating n birds have The beaks are reddish in color and the brown speckled with white on the body is splashed with black lack on n the head and throat The elm trees arc are in bloom Their brown velvet coats have been flun flung wide disclosing disclosing- buds to th warm warna air Within the thick fur nestles th II of red balls hun hung with slender threads Slowly the balls open and pink tassels han hang from irom tho those e threads After a time we find gold golddust golddust dust clinging thickly to the ends of the opened balls and is s sifted into the air |
