about each church in the city A better showing than can cam bo be made blade by any oth other er western vestern V city during the past fortnight a a tribune reporter liaa has enjoyed the plea ant task of visiting the large and ever growing large number of churches and in salt like lake city in not one instance has a church been found which has not had a progressive year spiritually and financially in fact most of the churches show a decided increase in the list of members made principally by the advent of many churchmen from other cities bearing letters A careful tul count of religious bodies throughout the city having regular p places of W worship shows s the following figures baptist 4 catholic 2 christian 1 Con greg it lonal 3 episcopal 4 hebrew 1 1 church of jesus christ of latter day saints 27 lutheran 4 1 I methodist 7 presbyterian 4 I 1 scandinavian free mission 1 scientists 1 unitarian 1 salvation army anny 1 a total of 62 to this number might be added the salt lake bible society the salt lake sunday school association the ho salt lake deaconess board the utah union the Wor comans womans rians christian temperance union the young mens christian association and the ladles ladies auxiliary the combined christian endeavor societies and tile the combined epsworth leagues a total ot of nine which make a grand total of seventy one religious bodies in this city a most excellent t showing ing following Is a list of the leading churches of the city with statements as to their present condition and growth or progress during the year which has just closed a year which has been most encouraging to those who are devoting their energies to religious work baptist the rev henry B steelman iegan began his labors with the first baptist church on april 12 1831 1801 and since that time the parish has steadily grown the pastor Is assisted in ills his work by two 1 lady missionaries miss rose J dark clark and miss li F eyles who are arc in charge of various other work in the church also the burlington branch was organized in 1891 and a chapel built in 1892 1 at poplar grove this chapel is also under mr steelmans Steel mans care and its success lias has been marked during the last year the M L ella preston memorial chapel on second south and tenth west w was a 3 completed last year and Is another r branch of this church it Is in charge of mr W W randolph has a 0 congregation gre gation of end and all the regu regular lax societies of the ds denomination nomination the chapel Is a neat structure seats beats and cost during the summer the first baptist church conducted regular sunday schools at farmers Fan ners ward and north salt lake the church proper on second south and second west has a regular congregation of an enthusiastic christian endeavor society under president A P F lindburg a junion eri endeavor deavor directed by miss clark and of which archie orero orem is the president an industrial du school also under miss darks clarks supervision and miss bliss eyles will shortly open a kindergarten in the large school building adjoining the rhe church which liaa has only lately been given to the parish pariah and which has been repaired inside at heavy beavy expense the regular sunday school under supe A J orem has fifteen teachers teacher sand and an ail average attendance of the ladles aid society madea special effort during the tha year yea r to ral raise funds tor for the general work of aho church the boys brigade Is another society and the ladles ladies missionary circle another both of which are in good condition one of the features of this church Is the music under the direction of mr peabody tho the choir Is made up offis of miss lawson lason mrs randolph the misses jackman mr 0 haver and 1 sir in cole in summing up the church has had a prosperous condition in its growth growt li and financially speaking the condition Is also good although tho the members have been burdened with a small deficiency fi fici ency for current expenses which has been carried tor for three years tho the outlook for this church and its bran branches ciles this year Is very encouraging EAST SIDE BIDE BAPTIST CHURCH A colony was dismissed from the stirs baptist church in october 1892 to form the east side baptist church and the latter today to day has a tine frame chapel which Is furnished very comfortably fort ably and located on the corner of third south and seventh east streets rev B S G C adams Is the pa pastor stor aud and he has built up an enthusiastic congregation of about miss mini glnn B morford is the lady mi missionary abary of t the he church and camo came from chicago for tills this purpose the sunday school Is in a thriving lvang condition under superintendent D N spencer assisted by eleven teachers the school has an average attendance of eighty children miss bliss adams adama Is the president of OC an active ladles ladies home and foreign society arid and mrs koontz Is president of the ladles ladies aid I 1 ety ity which has enjoyed d a prosperous year christian endeavor and junior christian endeavor societies nourish flourish under the leadership of miss morford who also has interested the young people in an industrial school for boys and girls financially the condition of the church Is good at the op erting of the new year los last year by the united et ef frota of the members a debt of 1500 w was as lifted mr adams la Is the baptist missionary for tho the utah district and spends much of his time at ogden provo prove and where growing churches of this denomination are flourishing Cat catholic bolic one of tho the oldest churches hes in tho the city Is st marys cathedral which was built in ili the early carly seventies but ono one would hardly recognize it now tor for in the last month the interior has been entirely repainted arid and inside new carpets have boon bc en laid ald the altar statues anil and sanctuary re gilded and a general renovation lias has taken place mr 1 W P omeara olleara ted and the other members of this church in fit this cause and raised the money to make the needed repairs tho the rt RL rev L scanlan the orphanage re and the holy cross hospital all ot of which have hava passed a successful year the church itself has steadily gron grown n and la Is in an excellent condition at present ST PATRICKS CHURCH another catholic church Is located on the west side to take in that portion of the cl city ty st patricks church chuoc was erected in 1893 and rev hev dr kiely placed in ili charge the building is a substantial 9 frame on Four tji west near F fourth south street and clough chough comparatively ively a new organization it Is 13 rapidly growing and the year has sten much progress father kaly the year in a financial way and also in helping in the general church work another society in the church and which welcomes all outsiders who may wish to comee come in the central literary club of which bliss ella dukes is the able leader the club has had a very profitable and pleasant year in the study of whittier r longfellow Longfe How and lowell the meetings every saturday night have been a great interest to all though a young church the central christian Is forging right light ahead congregational in an architectural sense the first congregational church Is the leading one ln in the city as Us its imposing gray stone edifice on east first south la is one of the tbt points of interest the pastor rev clarence T brown has done excellent work during the year in building up the
