Tho following Is taken from tho Herald-Republican of the 4th Inst.: Oliver SJosledt, piano dcalor of Salt Lako City, with salesrooms In tho Scmloh Hotel building, was arrested last night by City Detcctlvo Georgo Cleveland, acting on instructions received re-ceived by tho local police from the marshal of American Fork, January 21. Although Mr. SJostedt Is well known In Salt Lake and has been here since January 21, ho says, and, according accord-ing to tho record at police headquarters, headquar-ters, was supposed to havo escaped from tho marshal ut American Fork, the local pollco did not nrrest him till last night. When taken to the pollco station, Mr. SJostedt saya that he demanded an attorney and nlso askcd'Coptaln of Pollco i: in II V. Johnson that tho marshal at American Fork bo telephoned tele-phoned and asked if SJostedt was still wanted. This, ho says, Captain Johnson John-son refused to do, ordering him locked up until morning. J. W. Lewis, friend of Mr. 8Jostodt, telephoned R. II. Thurman, Mr, SJob-tcd's SJob-tcd's nttorney. Mr. Thurman camo to pollco headquarters and askod to see his client. This wus refused him, he says, and ho asked that Mr. SJostedt bo allowed ball, but says this, too, was refused. s "I then demanded that the captain telephone tho marshal at American Fork," said Mr, Thurman, "and this he tried to put off til' tomorrow. I Insisted and on my promise to pay for tho call ho telephoned. The marshal mar-shal informed Captain Johnson that SJostedt was not wanted there." Mr. SJostedt was arrcstccd last September for Intoxication while In company with a number of friends at Amorlcan Fork. He wns convicted In tho Juctlco court and appealed, Mr. Thurman acting as his attorney. He was recommended to tho mercy of tho court by the jury and tho court sustained sus-tained the fine of $16 imposed in the lower court. The day following, January Jan-uary 20, SJostedt says, the flno was paid In American Fork. Mr. SjoBtcdt's trouble was all caused by his slipping away from Provo on tho day of sontenco without paying his fine. |
