Show ube fin finlayson automatic wire trope Tram wa HE transporting ran sporting of ore v ft V from mine to mill or railroad is a matter of great importance to the mine operator and one usually of great expense and adds more or less according to conditions to the expense of operation one of the first considerations of the wide awake mine manager of today is how to cheapen cost of production ife he figures flouris so much per ton for his product delivered at the ore bins this the great maj arity aty have down to a nicety but does doer he as carefully consider his transportation por tation charges many do and many do not the advantages of aerial transportation in a mountain mountainous country over ove r I 1 all other methods of handling materials are so thoroughly under and many devices one of the methods is commonly called the jig back system this is a very simple one a and nd suited to short distances down steep pitches the material needed for a line of this kind is inexpensive a as is also its erection two stationary cables are stretched from ore banat mine to desired point at mill or railroad each cable has a bucket which will run upon it t these buckets are attached to a traction or tail rope which passing over a sheave with brake arrangement at upper end controls the speed of the buckets at the commencement of carry THE prospectors FRIEND stood that 1 it t is hardly necessary to dwell upon them in mining sections the burro generally packs down the ore for the prospector then comes the mule or as the output of the mirie mine increases this method is very expensive and as a rule very unsatisfactory and so aerial tramways tram ways are demanded the aerial method has been in practice for many years and is at the present time being used more commonly than heretofore there are three well known methods of aerial transportation for it where conditions are not right for the jig ig back systems then one of the other two methods are resorted to either a single rope tramway system or a double rope tramway system in either of these methods conditions cut very little figure as these machines are desia designed ned to and do surmount all kinds of conditions and work satisfactorily when you have one of the proper design and the same is erected properly of the single rope systems the huson patent endless wire rope tramway stands at the head of this style of machine it is intended for use where a carrying 11 W FROM THE LOWER TERMINAL LOOKING OP UP THE LINE ing r ore on the jig backs one bucket is at the lower end and one at the upper end the bucket at the upper end is loaded the brake arrangement loosened and this bucket then starts down dowid the line in doing so the empty bucket is pulled up the line to the mine ore bin thus we have two buckets working back and forth forte and doing good work and answering the purpose for which the jig back is intended to use this method metho d however all conditions must be exactly suited 5 capacity of ten tons an hour is to be the maximum tonnage the main points to be considered in all tramways tram ways are simplicity and durability in the huson these two points have r e every consideration the T h e principles of construction st may be briefly described as consisting consi stin of an endless wire wi 1 re rope trave traveling ng over grooved wheels or sheaves secured to the cross arms of elevated supports placed from to feet apart the rope carrying suspended buckets so fixed as to clear the sheaves passes around large horizontal or inclined wheels provided with devices for gripping the rope which prevents the same from slipping and enables its speed to be regulated it will be seen that when the rope is set in motion either by CONTINUED ON PAGE EIGHT i i the finlayson automatic wire rope rop tramway r CONTINUED FRO PAGE FIVE gravitation or motive power it will carry with it the buckets and where the grade is not less than twelve feet in one hundred feet it will transport freight without the aid of power the loaded sider going down being sufficient to overcome all friction and carry the empty buckets up the grade in this system we have the automatic loader and dumper so that the tramway awhile while in operation era tion is never stopped to load or unload the vertical clip which attaches the bucket to the rope is worthy of special mention as it is the only one used on single rope systems that gives entire satisfaction and all hold of the clip is on the outside of the rope A very important feature is that by means mean s of brake bands placed on the same shafts that carry the large terminal grip wheels the tramway is always under absolute control at the present time owing to improved methods of treatment many large bodies of low lov grade ore are being treated and here is where the third method of aerial transportation ia used this is by the double rope system it if you expect to carry a large tonnage you must have a machine s suited uit ed to the work the jig back and J the single rope systems are all right in their proper places but where capacity is demanded and over severe routes both of these styles of machine must of a necessity give way to the double rope system one of the latest and most improved tramways tram ways of this type is the finlayson patent automatic wire rope bope tramway made and sold by the mine smelter supply co of denver AL 1200 FOOT SPAN AND BUCKET colo olo who have branch stores in salt lake city and the city of mexico A working model of this machine may be seen at the salt lake city store until the finlayson system was put on the market there had been by all users of the double rope systems a demand for a machine of this type that was automatic safe and durable appreciating inar the necessity and demand foy for such a machine and one on which up freight could be carried in quantities mr C T finlayson a man anan of large practical experience in aerial transportation after years of study and and actu actual alfield field work on the other makes patented this thi s device and it stands today as the best double rope tramway system it differs from the other double rope systems in many ways it is automatic never having to stop to load or unload 14 A az ai DERRICK AND BUCKET ON THE LINE and d the traction rope is carried on sheaves just where it belongs the clips on the rope to which the buckets are attached cannot slip too much stress cannot be laid on this very important point no matter how steep the grade or how heavy the load a bucket once attached to this finlayson clip cannot run away the clips are attached to the running rope spaced as the tonnage demands in loading or dumping a bucket it is detached from the rope and remains stationary while beino being loaded or dumped af after ter a bucket has been loaded it is accelerated to the full speed of the running rope before it is attached automatically thus doing away w with ith all jar strain and as the running rope is able to pass over or under a sheave as the necessity demands the claims made for the finlayson system are automatic large capacity small cost of operation and safety with a low cost of maintenance A competent force of engineers is employed by this company to look after the wants of all parties desiring this class of machinery as well as stamp mills concentration cyanide chlorination and smelter equipment at the present writing a tramway nearly a mile ion long is to be built at the american nettie mine at ouray golo colo the upper terminal being 1700 feet higher than the lower terminal the longest span will be 1800 feet in length and will have an elevation of feet from the ground at its highest point the stationary cable will be one and one quarter inches in diameter while the endless or traction rope will be one inch in d diameter ia meter when one stops to consider the ease with which ore can be handled and frei freight glAt and passengers cre rs carr
