Show C CROWDS I 1 R VISIT BEAVER COUNTY A large excursion composed of well known mining men investors business men stock dealers and newspaper men left for beaver county utah mining camps on the night of the dinst and before re V P F AO 4 AIN 7 minina some of the excursionists who visited the cactus club at newhouse turning to salt lake visited many points of interest in this great mineral field the train which was a special comprised three pullman sleepers a diner and a chair car in the pullmans every berth was taken and the salt lake route officials exerted every effort and care to make the occasion an enjoyable one to the ex the train pulled into milford early sunday morning and was soon on the branch line running to frisco and newhouse no stop was made at the former place the excursion reaching newhouse about 10 here the excursionists deserted the cars and captured the town the first thing on the pro gramme was the inspection of the mammoth concentrating plant of the newhouse mines smelters shelters Sm elters company through which the crowd was conducted by courteous and capable men on the newhouse staff much interest was taken in the operation of this plant and the flow of ore was watched from the time it entered the hopper until its metallic values were all recovered and the tailings carried to the waste dump unfortunately but few of the party were p permitted err bitted to inspect the cactus mine ow ing probably to the fact that proper in had not been forwarded to manager moffatt many were disappointed be cause of their inability to examine this great bonanza but the few who were among the lucky ones including the newspaper men of the party were most favorably im pressed with the magnitude of the ore bodies blocked out in this wonderful property so large were they in fact and of such excellent grade that the visitors were almost dumfounded dum founded and actually unable to estimate the value and tonnage of shipping ore exposed in the mine workings the bulk of which was on the level and up the great ore find in the cactus was made in july of last year on the foot level and since then it has been driven upon for feet and found to be all of feet in width it has been raised on for six and ha has been proven to go almost if not entirely to the surface and is in creasing ln in size as it goes down on the and levels it is rich and strong and is now being extensively opened up on the or tunnel level from which level a large is being sunk on high grade copper ore in this gigantic body of mineral there are veritable mountains of ore going from 18 to 32 per cent in copper while the vast tonnage of low grade which is milled runs from 1 to 7 per cent the average of the ore milled of late being about 5 per cent the richest of the ore is a black oxide interspersed with copper pyrites and chaleo pyrites the mill is now treating from to tons of ore daily its capacity capi city is 1000 tons and it is estimated that there is enough ore in sight in the mine workings to keep the big plant in continuous operation for ten years to come to say nothing of the great volume of shiy ship ping ore blocked out ready for extraction and the market the working tunnel is feet in length or more than a mile through this avenue the ore there is no waste is hauled by an electric mine engine with a train of twenty one cars to the loading station at the entrance of the tunnel here the mine product is loaded into standard cars and hauled by shay locomotives co to the great ore bins above the mill the excursionists were much pleased with the pretty little town of newhouse lse with its many cozy cottages for the employees of the company the cactus club the cactus inn and with the small but attractive depot and highly praised samuel newhouse for the effort he to be found in the west before leaving ne newhouse several of the ex excursionists s also visited air properties among which were ivere til in indian bilan quen now a producing mine the blackbird which is being extensively developed the imperial another splendid prop property arty the comet owned by the nevada utah mining company which adjoins the cactus and which has fine ore bodies in sight the lincoln and other promising properties in the afternoon the train pulled out for frisco where the remainder of the day was spent in looking over the property of the jl horn silver mining alining 1 company a property that has paid over in dividends the lulu frisco contact and the washington the night was spent at milford and on monday morning carriages were kindly furnished by the enterprising citizens and mine and claim owners of milford and outlying districts and the excursionists were enabled to visit and inspect mines and prospects in star south star beaver lake and adjoining camps in star and south star stops were made at the talisman the cedar the progressive the cedar extension the commonwealth the hub elephant the harris progressive atlas and other mines where the visitors were most hospitably entertained the talisman company being represented by pat J donohue and the hub the property of the utah mining milling transportation company by that veteran miner tom fergusson another party under the guidance of A J mcmullen inspected properties in beaver lake district visiting the old hickory mine of the majestic company the copper mountain owned by samuel newhouse the property of the beaver copper company of which henry catrow is president and which adjoins the copper mountain the success mine of which john E merritt is manager and which is owned by the duluth exploration company and the skylark mine now in course of intelligent development an excellent dinner was served by mr merritt at the success mine while supper was much enjoyed at the skylark it was late in the day before the last of the excursionists returned to the sleepers the start on the return trip being begun at 1030 and the train reaching salt lake about 7 a m tuesday the visitors were more than pleased with what they saw with what they learned on their beaver county trip they were amazed at the splendid of the camps they visited with the activity characterizing operations s at the different mines and prospects visited and with the splendid showing of ore in many properties which give promise of soon becoming regular producers and dividend payers those availing themselves of the
