Show THE GREAT CAMP OF GOLDFIELD B by br r corydon W higgins i when the name of goldfield was given this famous camp its appropriateness appropriate riess was not at first fully appreciated to be more accurate the immensity of it cannot be realized at all until one has been over the ground and seen the district for himself while the most exciting tales of the riches there often get into print and are almost always greatly exaggerated still a most conservative estimate as to its great wealth almost staggers one the camp is about twenty eight miles south of tonopah To in esmeralda county and about sixty five miles north of bullfrog it was discovered in december of 1902 by some tonopah men but the secret of the find was vas not disclosed till later and the big rush did not commence till the latter part of 1903 it was in october of this year that L L patrick purchased the combination claims for the combination MINES COMPANY and the great success of this undertaking led to other showings made soon after on the jumbo florence and january which finally established the worth of the camp to and other famous properties have since sprung into prominence THE TOWN OF GOLDFIELD with such wealth producing mines in the neighborhood the town of goldfield has had a phenomenal growth in the past ten months it has risen from as straggling trag gling little camp into a prosperous little city of inhabitants one would be surprised to find the modern conveniences to be found in this frontier town the city is lighted by electricity and a water system is soon to be installed man many y substantial business houses have been built and goldfield boasts of the finest stone building in nevada five banks are doing well and the restaurant and hotel accommodations are very good daily automobile and stage connections are made with tonopah and bullfrog the only noticeable deficiency is in the postoffice post office service and this could be greatly improved upon columbia and Diamond field are little towns which have sprung up a f few ew miles from goldfield and the growth of these are almost as great as is that of goldfield the first important operations were on the combination mine and in one month after work had commenced the first shipment was sent from the camp from that time the shipments have been large and regular the company has paid out in dividends and has a reserve fund of more than twice that sum the amount of ore blocked out and on the dump places the valuation of the property very high A new ten stamp mill and cyanide plant have just been completed the company is now handling the property itself the ore is found practically on the surface under a few feet of wash and since the work was first begun the company has never been out of ore A stamp mill and cyanide plant is to be one of the improvements in the near future another famous lease was the florence owned by hennessy and winfield and M aa 7 aca street scene in goldfield combination the claims lie about three and one half miles a little south of east from goldfield and on the extreme THE mckane LEASE in the Diamond field end of the district the quartzite is perhaps the leader and should not be overlooked in mentioning the producers of the camp many consider this as one of the best mines yet opened up in the vicinity of goldfield and it has surely started its career under most favorable conditions dit ions here again we find some of these 7 ITS wall W 4 X 74 florence mine goldfield with jumbo in background the january mine goldfield olburn and F M ish are the officers of he e company THE NOTED SANDSTORM the sandstorm mining company has also contributed considerable to the output of 0 he e camp the property is now being worked by leasers leaders and some of the richest ore in the district is being taken out the personnel of the company is J L butler eastern boundary of what is known as the proven belt he property was visited the shaft was down feet but by this time a much greater depth has probably been attained as the mine is thoroughly equipped with modern machinery A fine showing of free gold ore is one of the recent developments at the dixie and a large body of splendid milling rock has been grass root values which have made goldfield so noted at a depth of fifty feet some large shoots of remarkably rich ore were found and when the foot level was reached the showing was even better john mckane recently purchased a half interest in the quartzite lease which still has almost a year to run there are hundreds of other good proper C IV je tk 4 14 A i ott 41 the quartzite mine goldfield the velvet mine goldfield T W kendall and H H brown the most important leases are the oddie gardner and the loftus davis mayne THE ALGEA GROUP the algea group owned by G kernick 0 and nd C H smith and which has not yet been incorporated is credited with some very rich fich ore and has a good mccord in production from the velvet fraction included in opened up the developments on this property has a strong bearing on the future outlook of the district as it is clearly demonstrates that the ore bodies extend much further east than was generally posed supposed su undoubtedly this will encourage others in that locality and lead to more extensive development work wark ties not mentioned above which are deserving of credit and which are not mentioned in detail owing to a lack of space A few of these are the goldfield oro mining company the black butte goldfield mining company the jumbo extension mining company and the lone star but enough have been mentioned to give the reader a general idea of the worth and mag of the camp the geological features have led to many unfavorable reports but still the work continues and the production constantly increases it is the leasers leaders who so far have taken out such great fortunes and while this does not tend to fully develop the mines it at least proves that the ore is there in prospecting new properties an ancient but effective method is employed open cuts are run in looking for the veins and this is usually successful as the values are usually struck within a few feet of the surface goldfield when compared with the usual run of new mining camps seems little less than wonderful that such wea wealth ith should have lain there while the prospectors passed over it for thirty years is almost incredible and even after the find was made the outside world scoffed at the discovery and would not be convinced that it was really so in ten months the mines of goldfield have produced over and probably half as much more which is still on the dumps the mines are but now in their infancy and should the values hold out and continue to do down this will be one mining sections in the of the greatest world |
