Show va vya 13 BULLFROG V 0 go N NEVADA E VA D A wj axa by corydon W higgins during the past few years nevada has held the center of the stage in the mining world while klondike has lost its fame and has been relegated to the tear rear ranks not since the days of virginia city and the old comstock has the state enjoyed such a wave of prosperity some of the most enthusiastic even look for a production to exceed the of the comstock A remarkable start in that direction has certainly been made in in the past four years when one sensational report followed so closely upon the heels of another the statements were not credited but when the actual shipments of the ore confirmed these stories a stampede such as was never seen before set in to the nw new eldorado the awakening of nevada was due to the discovery of tonopah four years ago the developments there soon justified the build ing of a railroad and now it has settled down as a leader among the producing camps from tonopah the excitement spread south and goldfield with its fabulous finds of the yellow metal made its bid for notoriety like magic the country for miles around was staked off so the prospector loaded his burro and sought for other fields and thus nevadas latest sensation was given to the world the first important strike in the new district was made on aug 9 1904 and the property was given the name of bullfrog this name was also given to the section and a district formed comprising the country adjacent to the original find the district lies about sixty five miles southeast of goldfield and is but a few miles from the california line its southern extremity borders on the amargosa amargoso desert and extends north and east into the grapevine and bare ranges it is about ten miles wide and from ten to twenty miles long almost simultaneous with the discovery of bullfrog was the completion of the san pedro los angeles salt lake road which affords a new avenue of transportation for the district las vegas the nearest point on the railroad is miles but this distance will be greatly lessened by a new wagon road now being constructed this is by far the easiest entrance to bullfrog and the greater part of the freighting and travel is now by this route the stage journey is made in three days while the freighters take from seven to ten this seems to be the only reliable way of getting merchandise into the district and affords two markets salt lake and los angeles such heavy freighting fraight ing expenses necessarily cause high prices but not so high as might be expected below are a few prices quoted by the leading merchants of bullfrog lumber 13 to 15 cents per foot shingles 12 per M mr nails 12 cents per pound barley 8 cents per pound eggs 75 cents a dozen butter 50 cents per pound flour per so 50 pounds gasoline 4 per five gallons coal oil per jer five gallons and potatoes scents 8 cents per pound wages are uniformly high carpenters receive 8 and miners 5 for eights hour shifts taken all in all bullfrog is on a par with the average mining camp where living is high and prospecting very expensive bullfrog will undoubtedly have the next boom and great crowds cro ads of people are already pouring into the scene of activity the stages and autos are loaded to the limit and the foot passengers comprise no small part of the investing army the small amount of development work done so far has proven some marvelous properties and as the district is a large one the mines will not be confined to any one locality at present however the excitement to be centered around beatty rhyolite seea aS the original bullfrog this will probably W the center of the great camp but some be good goo reports come in from the outlying districts distri for miles around I 1 will attempt but a brief outline of tin principal properties that are at the present writing open to comment THE OnI ORIGINAL GINAL BULLFROG was the first location to draw any p par at nicular attention to the camp the claim were staked out by E L cross and shorty shon harris in august of last year and it was wa the unusual turquoise ore from this prop erty that set the crowd going the strike stat at was made on a low hill on the edge edg of the desert and of some the richest oreval ore wag f found on the surface in the huge quam droppings crop pings which cap the hill three claim in all were located and mr harris soon after sold his interests to the present company those now interested are M M detch fred carlson robert lanka joe mcgalliard and E L cross george pierce WV aa 10 montgomery shoshone mine original bullfrog mine the new superintendent formerly with the golden fleece of colorado is thoroughly developing the property into a great mine the bullfrog ore has obtained a widespread reputation owing to its peculiar appearance pe arance this rock varies between a turquoise and a bullfrog green and in the richer specimens large pieces of free gold can be seen the first shipment from the mine and also from the camp gave net receipts of per ton for the seven tons shipped A much larger shipment is s now being prepared for the market THE BULLFROG WESTERN to the west of the original is the bullfrog bulli western seven full ful I 1 c claims I 1 a and on which sufficient work has been done for patent the companas comp anys officials are arc T r L oddie president L L patrick vice president major gardner general manager an I 1 J T Over berry H E woodard and T V bonneau some very high assays essays have been bee stained from different parts of the prop litt ty THE BULLFROG ECLIPSE in the same locality is the bullfrog clipse including three claims and a frac on n connected with this company are nuary jones judge ray darcy therland john cook P E obrien john ennessy and P H mckenzie A shaft is ing eing sunk on a six foot ledge with assays essays bing ing as high as to the ton east of rhyolite we find another highly mineralized mineralized belt running in in a northerly diction it and bearing slightly to the west on aie e southern end of this belt is found the LIGE HARRIS aiming ining company the property consists of t x claims where work is being rapidly rushed shed and the vein opened up and ex ored adjoining rhyolite on the east is the LADD BENSON BENS ON property ro perty which has been one of the sensa lons ions to attract attention to the camp on he same hill and to the north we find the interest this mine has proven to be one of the big things of the camp and gives promise of wonders an immense body of ore has been uncovered and the tunnel which at the present is eighty feet long has not broken through the ore this ore also has a peculiarity all its own consisting of a pink talc combined with broken quartz the values run high in both gold and silver running from to this product is being shipped to the salt lake smelters shelters sm elters as fast as transportation facilities cili ties will permit and the erection of a mill at beatty is under contemplation by the management on the southern end of montgomery mountain and about feet from the shoshone is the property of the PEERY montgomery MOUNTAIN mining company the group consists of seven claims and fractions and has one of the most promising p promising rom ising outlooks out looks in the district the formation and general trend of the ledges are almost identical with the shoshone and indications suggest that the one mile south of beatty the silver king group has also proven itself a winner and a large ledge with good values clear across is now being worked other properties of equal merit in this locality are too numerous to mention it would be impossible to enumerate all of the promising projects ts of the district in in any limited space the great size of the new wonderland counts as much in its favor as the fabulous richness of its ores the mineral deposits are not confined to any one section but seems to be distributed broadcast through an immense territory the general formation is rhyolite with crop pings of stratified rocks and the values seem to make on the contact of these formations goldfield and tonopah combined would fit very nicely into one corner of the bullfrog district it would not be correct to say that this is a new mining country as years ago an old plant was worked in the vicinity of gold center and the old ruins remain to tell the story bullfrog now has aa V W 7 N W bullfrog national bank mine bullfrog mine on ladd and denson benson mountain BULLFROG NATIONAL BANK r mining company the interests of this company are divided among L L and W F patrick sol camp william cochran and walter smith there are eight claims in the group upon all of which active development and exploration work is under way several shafts have been started and the main working shaft is now down over sixty feet some very rich rock has been found and a considerable amount of this is now sacked awaiting shipment the big talk of the camp is now over the montgomery shoshone Sho shine this property consisting of four claims lies almost on the summit between the rival towns of beatty and rhyolite the claims which were formerly held by the In dains were recently relocated for montgomery and edwards by old indian johnny who probably thought that his kinsmen were too slow on a mining deal which belief has since proven true mr edwards later sold his interest for and it would now probably bring a million the company is now incorporated under the name of the montgomery sho shone mines company of bullfrog with robert montgomery holding the controlling cont roling whole mountain is one vast treasure mound D H peery an old salt laker evidently had his eye on a good thing when he purchased these claims THE GOLD CENTER on the east side of the mountain are three claims belonging to the gold center mining development company in which sam adams and the tobin brothers are iner ested together with several prominent salt lake mining men included in the com banys holdings are fourteen full claims in the heart of the district and this promises to be one of the big concerns in the district THE HAZELTON GROUP in this section of the camp is the hazelton group belonging to judge W A sherman J H brown and loftus and davis of salt lake this was one of the early locations in the camp and furnished some of the sensations in the district east of beatty in the bare range are many fine showings which are not being neglected some remarkable strikes have been reported from this locality and in fact the richest find reported from the district came came from the longaway Long sway claim about the call and the mining world is breathlessly waiting for nevada to spring her next big sensation the firm of sexton mcdonald of beatty nev whose card appears in the engineering classification of the mining review are thorough mining engineers and will make expert reports on an bullfrog properties upon request theste these gentlemen are both well and favorably known throughout the west charles E sexton was formerly from colorado and J R mcdonald from montana |
