Show advantages OFFERED BY MOUNTAIN CITY special correspondence 0 o mountain city nev august 2 our boom is slowly recovering from the knockout knock out blow given it in its infancy by the closing down of the nelson mine after the company had proved that they had an ore shoot for a a length of feet at least with every indication along the entire length of the drift in the bottom of there being a bonanza beneath them it has been my bad fortune to have seen a number of mines in thi this state closed down because their rich ore bodies were thought to have been exhausted hit but this is the first time I 1 have ever witnessed the closing down of a property after making a big find in it the reason given for doing so was that the mill was not adapted to handling the different ores of the mine and did not save thie the values closely enough and that they had closed down to make changes in their plant this reason would be all right richt if they would make the changes but nothing is being done so it looks as though there was something else the matter it certainly is not lack of ore for there is no reason why they could not ship the ore they have in sight however as I 1 said before we are recover in from this blow and are getting in shape to show chow that this is not a one mine camp but that we have others here that are just as good as the neison and perhaps better M M johnson for samuel newhouse began work on the kunz group last week and has about got the water out of the shaft shaf t there is a large vein in this group which adjoins the nelson group which taken as a whole makes a fine concentrating proposition ion ranging from 20 to 40 ounces in silver 2 to ain 6 in gold per ton with stringers and bunches ot of very rich ore all through it johnson also has the old mountain city group under bond and will commence work on it next week with about sixteen men this property looks to me to be the best prospect in the camp for it has hag already produced several hundred thousands from a surface shoot more than teet long and at no place more than 60 feet deep and they scoped grass roots and all for a person can stand on the surface and loo look k down into all of the old workings at the Greenb greenback dek where ae the almost solid silver and gold ore was found they have been sinking an incline shaft with the vein in the hanging wall ahead of them they have started to crosscut cross cut from the bottom at a probable perpendicular depth of feet and when they cut the vein we lock for some sensational ore to be found 0 P poole of denver colo is developing ln a group of claims east cat of the kunz group that johnson has under bond and has about completed the first feet of the foot tunnel he is driving for the vein on the surface this vein shows from three to five feet in width with from four lo 10 six inches of very rich ore the balance being a good grade of concentrating ore R R ives of salt lake breaks ground today for a shaft to be put down feet on the resurrection ground this ground in early days produced some of the richest ore found in the camp an and d when the inflow of water drowned out their armstrong hoist they were in ore which was netting them over per ton at the smelters shelters sm elters ives is going down after this shoot with the chances ten toone in favor of his getting it before his shaft reaches the level davidson ryan are opening up a fine body of high grade ore in the kanawha Kan group situate about three miles from town the ore running from 80 to ounces silver with about 15 per cent gold they have a group of eight claims and it is a group that willbe heard from before long as the veins are all good permanent looking on the surface and give high assays essays at numerous I 1 points there are probably or more prospectors t ors scattered around through the hills w within a radius of twelve miles from this damp and they have come and are still 1 coming every day idaho oregon utah and other states and all whom I 1 have talked with are very enthusiastic over the surface I 1 showing of this part of the county and the f facilities we have here for cheaply handling the ores when found there is wood in abundance 1 for fuel purposes indoor and for mining timbers fimbers lots of good water power going to waste aste an ideal cour country itry and climate for prospecting and working in plenty of grass for their stock and with veins cropping at the surface and showing values at that point which aich were they situated in any other state would cause a stampede stam pete of prospectors and investors to them van duzer creek about eight miles from this place was worked for years by placer miners and in a crude way probably has hag been taken out and all of the cleanups had to be mortared to extract the gold from the quartz and only superficial prospecting has ever been done to find therein the vein or veins which was the source of this gold two prospectors from oregon clinton hage came in there last june and in a very short time discovered a vein assaying about 27 in gold and 75 ounces silver at the I 1 grassroots and have found the same values in three different places along the vein for a length of nearly feet and the ore gets better as ar they go down on oll it ft they made their discovery within about fifty feet where the placer in the gulch was very rich I 1 hien mention tion this to show the cial character of the prospecting that has ha heretofore been done in this coun country and to show the opportunities that remain for the intelligent and industrious prospector who will get out and work a little and not put in all of his time trout fishing and hunting sage chickens or in riding over the hills prospecting from horse back which has been the way in which this country was earlier looked over there is still a large country round about here to bw prospected and there is room for hundreds of prospectors without their crowding one another for taking a stretch for about seventy miles ae or more in length and from eight to fifteen miles wide nearly every little gulch has been placeres pla and produced more or less gold nearly all ol of which was contained in quartz showing that the sources of this gold was froni from nearby veins and a small amount of intelligent work would undoubtedly the veins from which this gold came just at pre present ent there are more laboring men here than there is work for and unless a man is prepared to prospect for himself or is able to get along without wor working kingl would not advise him to come here buffor those who have some capital eit either hitherto herto to prospect for themselves vesT or tor to take an interest in some good claim and help develop it I 1 believe this part of elko county offers as good an opportunity as any por portion of the west and men of that kind will receive a liberal welcome from all inhabitants here WM WILLIS |
