Show THE REVIVAL OF AN OLD CAMP the men who worked in the mines of utah a quarter of a century ago knew alta located about twenty five miles from salt lake city in the wasatch range of mountains as they would a book it was a great camp then and for that matter it is now but in those days alta was at the head of the list while other camps of utah at that time were insignificant in comparison it had its dividend payers while the younger camps were scarcely heard of in that respect the mines operated in the camp then were mostly owned and controlled by english capital and few americans shared in the distribution of velvet neither did the english stockholders get all that was due them dishonest managers carried off the big part of the game and the final result was a general smashup smash up the mines ceased to operate a congressional investigation followed the camp went to pieces generally and where a town stood once populated by several thousand people the jack rabbits had fuu sway this con continued until un til less than five years ago when it occurred to several salt lake mining men that the old camp might be a good place for investigation and research modern methods were introduced the miner found plenty of ore the camp began to revive and commanded attention again an important event in the history of the camp took place last week when electric lights burned in alta for the first time in its history A power plant built down the canyon by the columbus consolidated mining company was started going and from this source several mines in the camp will receive power for the operation of machinery the columbus consolidated company has commenced the construction of an ton concentrating mill and it will be in operation by the middle of september and so it is 1 17 S that energy and enterprise are bringing alta to the front again some rich mines are being opened there and they will be heard from in dividend way if they remain in the hands of conservative serva tive and experienced managers figures have been given out to show that alta has produced enormously in the past considerably in excess of of this sum the famous flagstaff produced the emma valejo and north star 2 south star nabob grizzly 1 I 1 city rocks prince of wales mckay and revolution albion toledo oxford and geneva savage and montezuma frederick and crown prince and peruvian this is only a partial list of the early day producers the ore extracted was confined largely to the rich surface deposits and system syster rr was utterly lacking in almost every u undertaking |
