Show A description OF THE NEWHOUSE MILL the magnificent enterprise undertaken by samuel newhouse on the west side of the frisco range in beaver county utah is d deserving of the widest publicity that it is not a stock jobbing scheme preceded by mining pyrotechnics is abundantly proved by the magnitude of the undertaking and the presence of exact science in its application to the minutest detail involved in the economical handling of the mine product and in the means to secure certain definite results A few words on the geographical position of newhouse the new camp and on the locality from which the mineral wealth is to be drawn seem necessary ry to an intelligible review of the mammoth enterprise ter prise n now ow nearing completion the west side of the frisco mountain is marked by a bold escarpment that from near the summit of the mountain descends vertically a distance of to feet and represents a northerly and southerly line of faulting or profound fracturing and displacement of the rocks that line of easement provided the channel for the intrusion of granite which as a great dyke traverses the foothills along the west side of frisco mountain notwithstanding the violent vertical displacement of the west portion of the mountain the arata represented b by y the limestone and its capping of quartzite were but t slightly bent or tilted from the horizon tal tain the vicinity of the cactus the newhouse property reverse conditions maintain to the west of the cactus mine the bestone limestone me stone is upturned and dips at an f angle of 45 to go 60 degrees to the east or towards the fault this fact is mentioned because of its significant bearing on the property under consideration suffice it to lay ay that t the cactus mine occupies a similar relation to the great fault on the western side to that of the horn sliver silver mine to the fault on the eastern side of frisco mountain down into the practically inexhaustible ore chambers of the cactus a three sulp hides development having proved the existence of enormous bodies of low grade ore and its proper treatment having been determined the next problem to be solved was the transportation por tation of thousands of tons ions of material comprising steel piping structural steel 15 brick lumber etc and the necessary machinery newhouse is 1100 feet nearer sea level than is frisco and only four our or five miles distant as the crow flies files A railroad eight miles long was built and down 0 o n which with hard set brakes the trains descend to the little city just springing up on the wah wah desert and in which the panting of a blustering steam derrick the wood pecker like clatter of steam ri the sounds of saws and hammers have succeeded to the pitiful bleating of transient sheep and the howling of their natural enemies the coyotes the water problem was then solved by the purchase of six large springs nine miles west in the wah wah range the springs were piped to a receiving tank from which a line of 14 and 12 inch riveted steel pipe was la laid id across preuss valley to the cement receiving and distributing tank situated on high ground above the mill and town the flow is 1500 gallons per minute A mile or so east of the mill is the mouth of the foot tunnel w which will soon furnish ingress and egress from the b bottom of the foot shaft electric engines will draw the ore cars from the mine to daylight each car will then be successively ces run into a large steel tube resting on rollers electric power is then applied to the tube which to use ordinary english is turned bottom side up and the ore discharged onto a grizzly made of steel rails the oversize goes into the bin and is then fed to a powerful crusher from which along with the undersize under size it is discharged into side dump railway cars when the train is ready a 65 ton chay locomotive will steady the cars down a four per cent grade three miles to a point several hundred feet north of the mill each car wil then be weighed on a 60 foot fairbanks scales from the scales the train proceeds over a trestle and enters the mill between the power house and concentrating building from a height of 40 feet the ore will be discharged into bins under the track coal will be delivered in the same manner to bins on the east side of the trestle the fire boxes and which brings the feed water to degrees F before it enters the boilers the economizer connects with the self supporting steel smoke stack eight feet in diameter and feet high bypass by pass flue and dampers conduct the gases either through the economizer or direct to the stack as occasion may require V F A t THE CACTUS MILL LOOKING EAST from the bins the ore is carried by bucket elevator to the west and delivered to the roll plant consisting of two nets of holthoff and two sets of allis chalmers rolls the ore is then conveyed by bucket elevators from a cement pit and fed to revolving screens the oversize being returned to the roll plant for re crushing the undersize passes to hartz jigs thence to wilfley tables of which there are about thirty and each provided with the slimes are delivered to conical steel settling tanks then to the slime tables from the tables the concentrates are conveyed outside by means of shaking launders and dropped into cars then to the drying bin provided with steam coils the slimes are also disposed of by means of launders and held in pits for pos sible treatment re in the future to the uninitiated the foregoing will be greek but the experienced millman will see in the process the perfection of economy in handling the ore and in the use of water which after settling will be pumped back into the mill and reused re used the concentrating building and power house are under one roof and occupy an area of feet in length by feet wide the west portion of the building is built of heavy structural steel enclosed with corrugated iron and is fireproof the power house is built of structural steel and brick the building smoke stack trestle work machinery etc rest on cement foundations the battery consists of three babcock and wilcox boilers with a capacity of H P the fuel is supplied by gravity from the coal bins A greene economizer is used for the utilization of the heated gases from two westinghouse steam turbines each making revolutions per minute develop 1050 H P the entire plant is electrically driven each department having a separate motor the current is furnished by two westinghouse generators of K W each and are of the direct connected type aeterna nate current and are connected to the steam turbines A thirty drill capacity in to the east of the mill are the machine shop and an assay office tto to the southwest on land owned by the newhouse mines alne s smelter co a little c city ty is being erected seventeen three four and six room dwelling houses cement plaster i outside and lime plaster plaste r and hard finished inside are being completed A brick hostelry named the cactus inn is nearing completion A club house also of brick will soon be built and furnished with dailies magazines and other reading matter for em plo water and electric lights will be put in the dwellings inn club house and other buildings gs owned by the company in fact mr newhouse is sparing no money nor pains in malting his town a model camp and in providing for the comfort and welfare of the residents with unusual and singular patience and courtesy engineer in n charge R H strickland ian d conducted your correspondent through the mill and explained in
