more than a vague idea of what the completion of that road will mean for southwestern utah and for the citizens of salt lake city nor has anyone aside from the builders of the san pedro and those who have passed over that portion of the road now op open en to traffic any idea of the magnitude of the undertaking der taking nor ot of tile the provisions being made for safe and tremendous traffic from leamington leavington Lea to south of milford the old 0 S L grade is being repaired and widened to eighteen teet feet in places where the grade is high the ties were wont to project several inches over the old roadbed all that is being remedied and heavy steel rails have been substituted for the light worn out iron of the old line thus bellev J 0 1121 1 V 4 N NO 5 Tu TUNNEL NEL ABOVE CALIENTES ing the conductors ot of the unpleasant task ot of roping the iron horse and leading him over the bad places or short sections where the only road was the right ot of way all along the line from milford to this point grading camps still linger and in addition to the labor of ct widening the old grade are adding side tracks every five miles those side tracks will be long enough to accommodate with some to spare the longest trains and means that about ten per der cent of grading and steel will be added to the cost ot of the road or roughly about one hundred ot of those sidings will be built between salt lake and los angeles As a factor in eliminating blockades accomma dating delayed trains and the avoidance of head enders enden those sidings will be equiha lent to double lines of steel i nearly all the truit fruit trade of southern california destined for the middle and northern states will go over the san pedro as well as the larger portion ot of the oriental traffic both passenger and freight in fact no intelligent computation ot of the traffic could be made except by those who are pouring the needed millions into the magnificent enterprise which in an uncompleted condition will be open for patronage between salt lake and los angeles within a month the mining resources of this section will be described in a future number of the mining review buta but a few lines on caliente as it is will be timely in this issue after traversing an almost level valley for a distance of ritty miles or so southwesterly from milford the san pedro roads turns southerly into a maze of low volcanic hills among which the steel rails curve and wind with no regard for anything saye save ease of grade and economy of construction the distance however is short and the train enters the clover valley wash an ever slow ly widening wash with walls of eruptive rock representing almost every formation known to the vernacular of the old timers of thee theae western wilds A small stream winds it 3 sluggish way down the wash and js is here and there utilized by occasion aly ranchers where the receding walls make room for garden truck and alfalfa patches at the junction of the clover valley wash with the meadow valley wash which enters from the northeast or from the mormon town of panaca the recession of the eruptive walls made room for a triangular valley a half mile wide and about one mile long and as flat as the proverbial pancake such is the townsite of Cal caliente lente along the base of the southeastern wall is a mixed association of frame houses and tents the latter largely predominating one large fireproof rock building destined tor for a store is nearing completion there are three stores ten saloons and a half dozen or so restaurants mostly in tents a half dozen or so lodging houses also mostly in tents and two hotels on the american plan the san pedro people own the upper central and eastern part of the valley and that 11 something om ething will soon be doing is amply proved by the enormous piles of brick and other building material A half dozen or so substantial frame buildings are in course of erection by the railroad kompany company and a half dozen concrete foundation indicate as many more houses within a short time long rows of piling and other rows being driven mark the site of immense coal bins from authentic zour sources ces it is learned that a round house to seventeen lo 10 locomotives c omo is to be erected and which with the necessary adjuncts and a lot more cottages means that the san pedro people will do ther share towards making Cal caliente lente an unusually active railroad city and that the expectations of the sanguine residents will be realized Cal caliente lente has a small coterie of genuine hist hustlers lers a number who are quietly aiding the hustlers and the usual proportion of fossils of the lower silurian type whose porridge dishes are always out for the prosperity that follows the efforts of those who work caliente is also aleo the outfitting outwitting out fitting point for gold fever stricken patients en route for bullfrog goldfield and intermediate prospective bonanza lauds
