isible ible to any exhibitor in the mining building a grand prize utah mining men will be greatly interested in the nature of our ex abit and what it is doing and has been dane done for r the mining industry of the state in the fir first zt place it is worthy of note hat mr S T whitaker director general of the he mining and agricultural exhibits received a gold medal rom the jury of wards because of the he fact that the utah tah mining exhibit was as completed and eady for inspection lithe n the opening day lid ind also because of he e general arrangement ent of the display 11 the opening day he e mining building as s in a chaotic tate there were any unoccupied paces and the building was filled ith th state and other plays ays in various grand prize the nature of the exhibit is a general and quite massive display of the various ores building and ornamental stones clays coals and other industrial products with which nature has so abundantly endowed butah utah the various ores include mineral it from rom about ninety different mines in twenty two mining districts in the state these displays are neatly grouped about the exhibit en cn tables and vary in quantity mines and metallurgy before the exposition opened to the effect that the display should shoud represent actual resources as shown chown by several samples from faour different parts of the ve vein n and should be accompanied by specimens of a the hanging wall b the foot wall c the gangue rock and d typical country rock this accounts for the massive character of some of the displays of accurse there is a display of our far famed great salt W 4 ca concentrating blant IN THE EXHIBIT ages of erection and installation only one S completed and some were so far be to they were worked upon until lorg g in the middle of the summer sev bev al 1 months after the specified time for p ening inthe in the case of utah however everything very ry thing a was wals ready and hardly a thing 18 been changed from the opening day to 0 le e present time as the various details had bad a 11 worked ked out previous to the opening r cause orthis of this fact we were awarded the from a few pounds to several hundred pounds from each property the outer edge of the space occupied by the utah exhibit which borders on tour four aisles is partly lined by a number of cases which also contain a great many specimens but of the finer kind the ahe massive ones being grouped on the tables the aim of the commission has been to follow as far as practicable some of the suggestions made by the department of 15 water now contains twenty per cent of salt and some gome beautiful crystals of salt obtained from the water there are also some fine crystals of from the immense glades of pure gypsum discovered upon the utah desert near the dirty devil river some of the largest and most perfect cr crystals in the world having been taken it would be use less to try to name and varied displays so I 1 shall confine myself to a brief description of our main exhibit and the model concentrating mill of which so much has been written in the eastern papers although the mill occupies but a comparatively small space it has probably attracted as much if not more attention than any display in the mining building and during operating hours the railing is lined with crowds of interested spectators spectator a F and the small vials of concentrates chic are given away at that time are as eagerly sought for as though they contained gold nuggets A great many of our unsophisticated eastern friends go away thinking they are several dollars richer in pure gold A western man would not have such a vivid imagination the mill has received great newspaper attention and some of the descriptions of it with an account of the process which have appeared in the eastern papers would give a mining man convulsions one de goes so far as to state that the mill would be enclosed in an immense glass case to prevent spectators from carrying off the loose gold dust it is a typical concentrating mill both in machinery and arrangement and its larger counterpart is found throughout the state in our var various ious mining camps at one end is a large ore bin from which ore is fed and 2 jigs are crushed in another pair of rolls and from thence are again elevated to the first this in short is the mill and the accompanying diagram and photograph will show still more detail and method of arrangement all the machinery has done excellent work although it varied in size from one fourth to one eighth of the corresponding commercial machine the now new table gave very good separation and while the surface is only about one fourth of the standard size machine a consequent disadvantage the work was very good after the close of the exposition the mill becomes becom 1 es the property of the utah state school of mines which will then have in its possession in addition to its already excellent equipment one of the finest laboratory ore testing plants in the country the plant has been eagerly sought by other mining ab lp 16 r 8 rn ruyh 16 ily dr a u czerr ling xa Y 0 0 cen tran 9 oxe s art water FLOW SHEET FOR FOB THE MODEL concentrating PLANT 1 I 1 automatically td to a gates gyratory crusher thence the crushed ore is elevated to four revolving the oversize from the first screen going to a miniature pair of rolls to be further crushed and the undersize being separated in the three following screens into four sizes the going to three jigs and the undersize to classifiers from the two classifiers which are large glass tunnels funnels with the usual upward jet of water the bottom product goes no 1 to a finia fine jig and no 2 to a wilfley table the top product runs into a settling tank with glass sides this settled material from the tank goes to the new table while the overflow goes to the waste the jigs are of the ordinary eccentric piston motion stationary screen side discharge two compartment type excepting that the sides are ae made of plate glass and the machine is uch smaller than its commercial prototype the tails from nos 1 institutions but to no avail probably no better ore could have been found for the purpose of demonstration than that used A large quantity of cactus ore was very kindly donated by one of the members of the utah commission mr samuel newhouse and this has lasted during the anti entire re season it is a ore carrying values in copper gold and silver the gangue consisting of a soft limestone e this material separates readily band and the bright yellow streak upon the tables might deceive the uninitiated with the belief that it was gold mr newhouse received a gold medal for the design of the mill and the ore run through the mill was also awarded a gold medal other medals awarded ded besides the four enumerated are a gold medal to the salt lake hardware company for its display of fine and beautiful keller balances a silver medal to the utah fuel company for the ex cellena quality of coal sho shown I 1 n and thic knea of vein this display consisting of several large blocks one of four tons weight a all ver medal to the state of utah for the iron ore display of several thousand pounds consisting of hematite and magnetite and last ly a bronze medal to culmer bros for the display of or br mineral wax there has been a constant instant flood of questions concerning utah and the mining districts of the state soma some properties being favored by the amount of interest taken in them probably due to recent inar market k et condl C conditions R altogether utah may well feel proud ot of the showing that she has made at the worlds fair and the honors she has carried off and that she will receive many times the money value expended in the display no one doubts for an instant while we may expect no sudden boom in the min lug industry as a result the seed has been jovn o v and the thoughtful visitor can cannot help but be impressed by the rich and varied display made and the excellent opportunities offered to the investor 7 utah is large and her mineral depo deposits siti are enormous and varied facts which the 4 visitors have noted and if we lead him to invest with us in this vast mineral wealth dealt it not only benefits him but the whole state heres looking to utah soon to b be crowned queen of the mining world j |
