THE MINING REVIEW lei grants pass ore april 8 at the present time the mining districts of northeastern josephine county are the most active in southern oregon here are found both quartz and placer mines many of which are being operated on a large scale but as X almather al matter of fact this section like all other parts of the southern oregon mineral zone is yet in its infancy with the great amount of development being done by the companies which have but recently taken hold of properties there the mines of northeastern josephine are but a of what they will be in two or three or even one years time up on grave creek the big greenback has thirty five stamps dropping continually and a sixty ton cyanide plant also at work the town of greenback containing some people is supported entirely by the mine A good wagon road leads into this district from the railroad there being but eight miles between them three years ago greenback was but a hole in the ground and no not t a very promising prom sing hole at that four or five years ago the prospectors who owned it tried hard to sell it for 2000 and were unsuccessful A company of colorado men headed by william brevort now of new york and president of the greenback mining company finally brought the mine and put in a five stamp mill the mill had not long been at work when the new owners discovered they were in possession of a bonanza five more stamps were added then five more and recently twenty more besides a sixty ton cyanide plant and much other machinery the greenback has been tapped to a depth of feet and shows worth of ore above this level superintendent C W thompson says they have enough ore in sight to keep the present plant busy night and day for twenty years to come grave creek from end to end is a network of pipes sluices ditches and flumes blumes being the equipment of the many hydraulic placers that are at work on the old channels along the stream the working of the gravel bars on grave creek began with the pioneer and his rocker and pan a half century apo ago and while the creek has been a scene of activity since that time there yet remains enorah ground to keep the plants giants at work for another half century the columbia lewis archer yokum and nash hydraulic trives in ires are all located on grave creak and all have enjoyed an excellent seasons run this year water arrived early there was a good depth of snow in the mountains and they yet have a run of several weeks ahead of them the amount of placer gold that will be taken out of grave creek this season will be far ahead of what it has ever been before over the divide south from grave creek is jump off joe not a very prettily named but withal a very picturesque stream with its natural parks of madrona cedar pine live oak and fir along the creek are rich old channels only scratched and the mountains are ledge ribbed and barely prospected here are found the dark clark and howland hydraulic mines and the baby klondike and gopher quartz quarts mines among the quartz properties the baby is enjoying the healthiest growth of all 0 C higgins of salt lake city who recently purchased this mine and has the management of it is a practical and thorough miner and is giving the baby the development and attention it has long been in need heed of the mine is opened by tunnel and shaft to a depth of some feet and the ore body exposed is strong and extensive at the present time a long tunnel is being driven below the original one and will tap the main ore body at a much greater depth as well as put things in shape for a more extensive and economic working the two stamp mill operated at present for development purposes only will be increased to one of a much larger battery mr higgins has several prominent washington and utah mining men behind him all are well pleased with the showing made by the baby aad are unshaken in their faith in its becoming a great producer the dark clark hydraulic placers are on jump off joe as previously mentioned As undeveloped and unequipped diggings they were purchased last fall by the late J K dark clark of los angeles mr dark clark made a great property of the old mine he increased the water supply by digging larger and longer ditches and flumes blumes more giants and piping were added new quarters built and an electric lighting plant put in to illuminate the diggings for night work the mines mine have enjoyed a fine run and have washed off a large amount of gravel mrs dark clark widow of the deceased J K dark clark visited the properties a few days ago and is delighted eh with them she has succeeded in getting senator W A dark clark interested in the mines I 1 with her and the placers are to be worked on a still larger scale in the future at the granite hill mines on louse creek which flows parallel with and near jump off joe ground is being broken for the erection of a ten stamp mill this will give a battery of fifteen stamps at this property which was recently purchased by the american gold fields company of chicago A new working shaft is being sunk and the mines shaped for work on a large scale su perin walter de states the new mill will be ready for work in ninety days time |
