Show EXPLORING THE searchlight searchlight nev captain edgar jadwin united states engineer gin eer corps has just returned from a weeks exploration of the upper part of the grand canyon of the colorado river between rioville Ri oville and el dorado both in nevada and separated by a distance of about seventy miles with captain jadwin were captain mellon and two indians and this constituted the whole exploring party ane purpose of the trip was an investigation of the upper rivers possibilities for navigation and settlement it being the intention of the government to spend a considerable sum for channel and other improvements if the report is favorable captain jadwin refuses to indulge any opinion conc concerning orning the country he has just visited as he is not permitted to make public such information before his official report reaches the proper authorities in washington he said however the scenery in this part of the colorado canyon is grani grand beyond description finer and more awesome than in the lower parts which are more extensively advertised and visited during those days we rode over the surface of the swift running little stream between great silent parapets of rock more than 2000 feet in height and in many places actually overhanging the canyon silence reigns there almost unbroken there is no railroad within ninety five miles there are almost no sett settlers lers the country is rough and forbidding and only the majesty of nature surrounds the visitor A few itinerant prospectors are the only white men known there thirty five miles above rio ville the grand canyon terminates the country for the most part is barren and no attempt has been made to improve it on on any considerable scale I 1 think there are one or two permanent settlers in the whole stretch captain meyler made one of the first official explorations some years ago and since that time one or two other parties have been sent bent in captain meyler found practically the same conditions as I 1 have the river is navigable for very small crafts most of the distance but there are boulders rapids and many obstructions which should be taken out of the way before there could be any practicable navigation while captain jadwin did not express any opinion as to the advisability of improvement pro it seems probable that he will advise against it captain meyler in his report did not favor the project in the least |
