to 5 in gold some very fine specimens of native ore have been extracted from this vein altogether about exploratory work has been done in the saxton mine at the aultman all the development work performed has been done in an oxidized iron ore the vein has been opened up to the extent of feet in width and drifted upon to the extent of with ith no present indication of its limits the ore will average much the same the mckinley companas comp anys possessions are looked upon as being among the most valuable properties in the district and are sure to rank in due time as some of the largest but little has been going on in that line during t the h e present year quite a large number of small operators are at work but the osceolo gold gravel mining company w which aich controls a large portion of the water rights of the camp did not start up at all the management beino being satisfied that for the first time in the history of the company the supply was inadequate osceola has produced many thousands of dollars in placer gold T the he product taken out is usually coarse and in the past some very large nuggets have been found several years ago ago one of the value of was discovered and at another time one was sold for 2400 there is yet much Z good placer grou ground nd in the camp which would pay handsomely if some means is devised whereby water could be obtained more handily little attention has been paid to quartz mining in the camp in the past but more interest is being taken now and in a few weeks the butterfield mining company compan y will have its new mill of five stamps dropping 1000 pounds each in operation and which the manufacturers have guaranteed the manage ment will crush and handle through a forty mesh screens screen forty tons of ore da daily ily the mill is so constructed that an additional five stamps can ba put in and the capacity thereby doubled manager E T knowlton who has arrived from boston has announced that these extra stamps are to be put in as soon as they can be obtained from the factory the mill will be a combination amalgamator and concentrator while the gold found in the quartz in the camp is largely free there is is some that can only be successfully treated by concentration in the mils mills employed in the district heretofore amalgamation was the only method employed hence the losses which otherwise could have been saved by concentration were consequently heavy the butterfield company proposes to avoid any such losses and expects to handle the ores with the highest possible percentage of extraction over the previous methods the company while the mill is in the process of construction st is carrying on a vigorous campaign of development and has opened up such a showing of oro ore that those in charge have reasons to feel elated the eagle exchange alin mining ng companas comp anys custom mill has been closed down temporarily for want of repairs but will be started up ag again ain s shortly th the e plant plan drops twenty stamps and handles sixty tons of ore berday per day when in commission again it will treat ores furnished by C B woodman and J W marriott owners of the woodman mine T B tilford one of the pioneers of osceola who began his career in the camp by selling water to placer miners at the rate of t three cents per gallon during the year of the rush to that section is the owner of sixty acres of placer ground which has brought him returns of as much as 5 per pan upon twenty acres of this tract it is ninety six feet from the surface to bedrock and lie he raises the gravel to the sluices by means of a shaft mr air tilford is also paying attention to the development of a quartz mining property which gives promise of yielding well others interested in placer propositions in the district and who have met with more or less success in their efforts are john breckenridge 1 11 dave hellenburg Kel lenburg abe shellen berger henry schilling and john winnen it is claimed that as much as in placer gold has been produced by this camp osceola has the proud distinction of being the headquarters for what is said to be the the best tungsten tung ston mines in the united states the properties are owned by J H marriott and consist of some twenty locations mr marriott informed a representative of the mining review that he has 1200 tons of ore in sight that will carry 70 per cent in acid the ore is found in places on the entire group of claims and in quantities evidently very satisfactory to the fortunate owner the properties are located twelve miles south of osceola and renewed activity was commenced upon them on the 1st ast dinst and is i to be carried on more extensively than ever before plenty of wood and water is an element found in the favored location of the mines which are eighty miles distant from the oregon short live railroad |
