Show worlds fair mines and metallurgy building j 1 he mines and metallurgy building for 1 ahe tl the he st louis worlds fair forms part of the east wing of the fan like general ground aplan plan of the exposition and is the last building aing on the south side of the esplanade leading to 0 the group of government buildings which are to stand on a higher level it will have a a rich background back ground gr aund of hillside foliage toward the southeast I 1 considered as part of the general scheme i it t plays a very unimportant role in the spectacular t ta display of the fair and for this reason ino 1 no I 1 attempt has been made to force attention t A to 0 it by such means as towers domes or br 1 similar architectural devices the outside dimensions are x feet the building is divided into eight oblong parts p arts almost equal in area the division is accomplished with glass covered and ventilated arcades from thirty to fifty feet wide which makes it possible that each one of the eight 1 divisions shall receive abundant light from every side and that no skylights shall be necessary directly over any of the exhibition spaces at the intersection of the two principal arcades through the main axis a colonnaded rotunda is shown with an appropriate monument the ground floor will f tarnish an exhibition on space of about square feet and about square feet may be gained by the introduction of galleries gal laries A subdivision sub division I 1 of the exhibit space into numerous alcoves for each classification is suggested the walls of the building are set back from the facade eighteen or twenty feet forming a covered loggia which surrounds the entire building I 1 the facade of the mines and metallurgy building may be likened to a screen bearing 11 the same relation to this structure as do the colonnades of the adjoining buildings to their structures the base of this screen consists of sculptured panels illustrating in bold relief mining and metallurgical operations in symbolical representations the background to the sculptured figures being of a rough golden colored glass which will be illuminated at night and show the figures in silhouette the figures ire are more than life size As a building for housing dousing exposition exhibits it was argued that it should express externally as much friendly dignity as would be compatible with its fis ephemeral character that it would he in in however to disguise its ephemeral character by the garb of severe and classic forms which we associate with the most lasting i n g architectural monuments of antiquity and that f furthermore being apart a part of the greatest show ever attempted it un doubt edly should be noyel novel striking and full of life i the style of architecture which it depre has been a source of much speculation some have aftem attempted apted to classify was it as an example of the nouveau art says mr theo C link the architect of the building but when I 1 recently heard an english art critic say in protesting against its inva invasion siou of great britain that this nouveau art is a malady the pernicious virus of which becomes more acute the farther it travels 1 y I feel as trong personal solicitude for a properly conducted baptismal ceremony let us therefore name it secession architecture perhaps I 1 will have to explain what secession architecture is if the name should not make it quite clear it means architectural liberty and emancipation with a strong plea for individuality it is a break ing away from conventionality in design it is more an architecture of feeling than of formula WORLDS FAIR NEWS NOTES the division of concessions and admissions has eleven hundred applications on file for various privileges it has been suggested that the
