Show AN INCREASED production the mining industry of utah although still in its infancy discloses a steady gain year by year and so marked is the activity activity in mining circles throughout the state judging from all indications that utah will soon take the lead in the output of imperishable wealth instead of ranking fifth in production as is the case at the present time and still the record made by our young commonwealth is something marvelous when it is considered that it was many years after the first settlement of utah before mining in any shape manner or form was indulged in in fact the record is all the more remarkable for the reason that for many years after the pioneers entered salt lake valley mining operations were virtually prohibited and every obstacle and discouragement was thrown in the way of the prospector and the miner so that in reality it is only during the past fifteen or twenty years that mining hasteen has been freely engaged in by those fully realizing how wonderfully der fully rich in the precious metals were the mountain ranges by which salt lake city is environed since then them the advancement made in a raining mining has been truly remarkable almost phenomenal and the output of the mining districts throughout the state has increased so rapidly that older mining sections have been outstripped in this respect and so marked has been the growth bof of the industry that as before stated this locality now ranks as fifth in production while so stupendous have been mining operations during the past ten years so remarkably rich have been some of the recently discovered mines mandof many of them copper producers that another a an 0 her ten years will see utah the equal if not nob the peer of any of the mining states of the union itis it is extremely difficult to obtain exact data as to mine and metal production as many companies absolutely refuse to give publicity as to the output and earnings of their properties on the first of the present year from data obtainable and careful estimates made the mining review placed the mineral output and production of utah for year 1900 at hon H B tatem assayer in charge of the united states assay office at helena montana places the utah output for that year at and makes comparison with the production of the year 1899 as follows 1899 quantity value gold fine gozs silver fine gozs copper fine ibs lead fine lbs ibs total 1900 quantity value increase gold fine gozs S silver fine gozs copper fine ibs 6 lead fine lbs ibs 00 total 3 the increase in the value of the output of 1900 over that of 1899 is per cent a most gratifying showing the gain in the silver output being especially large from a limited producer of copper the mines of utah made an exceptionably fine showing although the increase in the copper output for the current year will be much greater an increase in the gold output is noticeable noti cable but not as great as it should have been although the comparison son is most pleasing when it is considered that previous to 1895 utah had never been ranked as a gold producing state of any consequence I 1 the yellow metal very largely having been a byproduct by product in the production of the other metals another year however will see a greatly increased gold production in utah mining camps the lead output also shows an increase which shows well for this branch of the industry inasmuch as for the period covered in mr report the tendency of mining operations has been towards the production of gold and copper everything considered an increase of nearly five fi ve million for the year 1900 is a record that we may all feel proud of and is an indication of the increased interest being taken in mining in this state and illustrates that utah although still a virgin field is able to compete with any of the mining states of the west in the way of metal production the mining review from records carefully complied is able to give the production of mines in gold silver lead and copper the total output in these metals since the year 1877 and up to jan 1 1901 amounting to the magnificent sum of divided between the four metals as follows gold dust and bars lead silver bars and bullion 33 copper total the martha washington mining company of tintic gintic has haa purchased an adjoining claim the george washington |
