Show quicksilver IN THUNDER MOUNTAIN statesman boise idaho S D edwards the well known prospector and and mining mining man I 1 is in from the thunder mountain country he brings positive evidence that cinnabar quicksilver ore is to be found there in quantity he has secured samples of high grade cinnabar from a claim owned by prindle smith the ore is very handsome i the specimens easily running 35 percent per cent quicksilver these it is probable were picked samples given mr edwards by the owner but the former says the entire ledge will run from 15 to 20 per cent quick the vein is 10 to 15 feet in width making a very fine proposition here as always in a cinnabar deposit there is no regular defined vein of the quicksilver proper that comes in connection with certain formations known to those accustomed customer cus tomed tomed to mining cinnabar the allied material if the deposit permanent is per is always in well defined ledges with perfect walls and disseminated throughout it is the cinnabar the thunder mountain deposit lies between perfect walls the hanging being el shale and the granite it is some miles this side of the thunder mountain discovered by the cassells cas Ca wells swells where there is no granite gra nife whatever the cinnabar is probably within the granite zone about abou t two miles this insures sur esthe the stability of the country there being no breaks or faults so far as known the present value of quicksilver is 55 cents per pound it is sold in flasks flacks containing cont aning 72 pounds each there are few quicksilver mines in the united states the largest and the only property worked continuously bei being ng in central california at the best of these properties the ledge is but 6 feet in width and the average aver acre r of the ore is less than 8 pr per cent it is run very profitably the property is equipped with a smelter with capacity capaci tv equal to the normal output of the mine for a great many years large numbers of prospectors have hunted for cinnabar but without success there being no large deposits of the mineral whenever the least indication was found there were plenty of moneyed men to send experts to investigate cinnabar though is a peculiar mineral in that it is often found in pockets hundreds of miles from another di it is oftentimes called a mineral freak of nature became of this peculiarity mr edwards in commenting on this discovery said yesterday afternoon that never before had he be known of a prospect of cinnabar to be more favorable f avo rable from every point of view fearing that it was only a pocket mr smith immediately upon discovery began a systematic development for exploiting purposes he sunk potholes potholed pot holes at short intervals along the ledge it was always true and with the aver age of the ore 15 to 20 per cent maintained the full len length ath of two caal claims Ms the indications are that the development of this new discovery will result in great qui quicksilver ck silver mines in idaho if true mini mining ng men say it wilamean will mean more than any thing else to the mining industry of the state as this mineral is in especial deni demand and and its place of production upon a commercial scale is known and remembered by every mining man throughout the world |
