which her people have long enjoyed the name of bein being 1 bighearted big 6 hearted sympathetic bym pathetic and of always being ready to open wide wid e their pu burbes wh when en cases of needed assistance appealed to their generosity crene rosity and humanity hurn anity that this is th the e case was fully illustrated by the action of the colorado fuel iron company which without any solicitation whatever voluntarily contributed the handsome sum of for the relief of the sufferers of the scofield disaster this was a magnificent display of 11 generosity of the sentiment prompting the gift being as commendable as the gift crift itself was acceptable and coming coining as it does from froin a sister state demonstrates clearly that no selfish motive actuated the company in tendering this kindly aid and assistance to the afflicted the colorado fuel iron company is all right it has the best wishes of utah people and of the mining review THE time is rapidly approaching V for the next meeting of the international mining congress which convenes in milwaukee on the of june next continuing to the inclusive A thousand or more of the leading mining men of this contin continent eDt will attend this congress as delegates noted mining experts will b be e in attendance mill men and metallurgists will take part in its proceed proceedings inus and the capitalist and will be submitted and read by men who are thoroughly competent to talk on mining subjects the discussions which will take place will prove to the world the legitimacy 11 of mining 6 that minin and the product of our mines form the bac backbone k of the prosperity of the world the basis for all true wealth i this being the case it is to be hoped th that at utah that the west will have a good representation at the cono conr ress ess as t topics will be discussed and considered which will have an ii important 11 bearin bearing on the future welfare of this intermountain n alion reo ion and more this state with its magnificent mineral resources should have an exhibit of ores and metals at this congress which should CO compare favorably with those from other westan western states BEFORE the end of the present year it is quite likely that more will be known regarding reo ard t the value of gold placer diggings in utah ali than an ever before the colorado river has been designated 0 as a storehouse of gold o old and it is well known that it ita banks bed bea and bars are rich in their deposits le posits of the precious metals for bor a number 01 years the me work of t gold old recovery has been going 11 on along alfonc the river in a limited way and excellent result have followed we say in a limited way and by this we mean with rockers and arnal amal amatora gama o tors with a capacity of handling t only a few yards daily but the operators we were re well paid for their efforts still the output was not nob of such a nature as to cause a ripple of excitement in mining 11 circles such as is than likely to call marked attention to this locality as soon as major R B stanton has his dredging machine in active and success ful operation the dredge now being 0 built by mr stant stanton on and his associates is to handle 2000 cubic yards of gravel daily arid it is 13 estimated that the dirt will average average 25 cents to the yard while some of it will ru run n mu much h higher r if the enterprise meets with the success anticipated other machines will doubtless be installed and this will lead to a scene of wonderful activity for many miles up and down the river from all indications utah will yet take rank as the possessor of one of the greatest placer digging sections section to be found folind in this western country IT IS nearly two weeks now since the deadly explosion in th the e winter quarters coal mine at scofield this state and yet the cause of the basua casualty ity is not clearly established nor is it yet known just how many victims were ushered into eternity because of this dreadful catastrophe not a miner who was at work in the mine ut LA the time of the explosion lived to tell how it happened over dead have been taken out and it is believed that the lifeless remains of others are covered with debris and wreck pen cannot describe the scenes scene z in and out of the mine after the explosion lu in the twinkling of an eye a happy and prosperous mining camp was transformed into a vale of tears of grief and sorrow for more than homes we were re stricken wives were widowed and children were made fatherless prompt aid and assistance on the part of the kindhearted kind hearted and generous people of the state robbed the situation of some of its terrors but it will take time to soothe land and comfort the afflicted ones and to erase from their memory the horrible fate which overtook their loved ones in the way of financial assistance our people have been whole they have been able to meet the situation and already a fund of nearly has been raised for the sufferers the mining review points with pride to the way that mining men a and d mining companies have gone down into their pockets when appealed to for help the business men of salt lake of the state have done nobly in the way of cash contributions while the laborer and the men of limited means have done what they could outside help is also proffered and the good rood people of the country at large are showing to the world that when disaster er comes not nothing liing is too good for tho afflicted and those in distress THE cloven hoof of the american Smelt Sm eltin ill refining company that gigantic trust was strongly i in n evidence the first of last week A short time previous it had advanced the wages of the employees of its utah smelters shelters sm elters to the extent of 12 per cent this was well and good but it was soon disclosed that it had been the intention of the trust in allowing 7 0 this advance to 0 rob peter to pay paul and now peter or in other words the ore producer of this western country is catching it in the neck the jolt is a para lizer and came in the shape of a fall in lead quotations the decline being 30 cents in one day da y this arbi tary aulino ruling on the part of the smelter trust will work a great hardship among the producers and will cause stagnation in our leading 0 mining camps industrial conditions do not justify such a slash in lead quotations there has been no actual decline in the market and so we maintain that the reduction was arbitrarily arbita rily made by the american smelling smelting Sm elting refining refining 9 company such trusts have it in in their power to bear the price of different commodities at any time and they also have the power to throw a sop to producers at any time by allowing a slight advance to be recorded but viewing the situation in any and every light r it is plain to be seen that the masses are under the thumb of the classes and that under trust rule the real wealth producers p are but little better than serfs how long such arrogance Z on the part of combined capital will be tolerated by the american people remains to be seen but the end will eventually come in one on e of two ways the smashing of all trusts or the government ownership of railroads telegraph Z steamships banks smelters shelters sm elters and other industrial institutions with which the interest of the masses are closely allied |
