Show UTAH anthracite in history for many years past there has never been a scarcity of bituminous coal for home use and this because e I 1 of the fact that this country abounds in immense deposits of coal of excellent quality the coal fields bein being 0 located within easy distance to the east and south of this city while ad adjoining j 0 in states wyoming aad leading ing have inexhaustible haus haus tible resources in this respect As for hard coal or what is t termed anthracite th however utah users of this commodity have been at the mercy of producers in adjoining states pennsylvania anthracite and other hard coals are a rarity in this inter mountain moun taid region the excessive cost of of transportation por tation virtually prohibiting their shipment into this far western country the result being that users of anthracite in chis this city have had to depend principally on the colorado fields of hard coal for their supply and this be it said being much inferior in quality to the pennsylvania article while in cost it is entirely too high 0 every thing considered it will thus be seen that utahna have been at a disadvantage when the subject of hird hard or anthracite coal is considered and it is therefore with a feeling of rejoicing that th the announcement no is made that a fine body of fuel of this character has been found within a few miles of this city as the discovery is certain to to lessen the cost of this commodity the importance of the find bein being 1 a apparel apparent nt when it is stated that in quality it is superior to hat shipped in from colorado se several ferdl consign ments of this coal have already been made 1 to salt lake and have been on sale af 9 per I 1 ton and those who have used it i t so far state that it is an excellent article giving givanc 01 better satisfaction in the stove and grate than the same kind and character oj of luel fuel im imported P arted from our sister state we have stated that the utah antabi anthracite i s L cite is superior in quality when compared d ir with the colorado product a factor in favor af botn the utah coal being that it produces less 0 aa ab and at the same time possessing griper S review is not DO f heat qualities the mining able at the present time to give the abaly ses of the colorado hard coal so 80 that 4 a comparison of v values alues cannot be given in this article that oat of the utah product has been given publicity kity as follows moisture 35 per pe cent nt volatile carbon 85 per cent fixed carbon arb on 55 5 per cent ash asb 3 per cent and sulphur a trace and of this quality of coal itis learned that the owners of the new fi fields elds which are located eight miles from price in carbon county have a four foot body which has been followed into the mountain for a distance of feet the indications at this distance and depth being that the coal exists in such quantities as to justify the belief that the supply is adequate for all the needs of a city twice them the size of metropolis tro polis and should the railroad companies feel inclined to lend a helping hand band to this new neav utah enterprise there is no reason why the price per ton delivered should not be materially less than that now asked as stated above indeed the attitude of the railroads on the subject of transportation is the only thing 11 that need stand in the way of the extensive and successful operation of this new source of wealth with all conditions favorable it will not be lono long now before the users of hard coal in this city can depend on the new coal fields for their entire supply and at less cost than they are now paying g |
